PHILADELPHIA – After shutting down the Yale bats Saturday afternoon, University of Pennsylvania baseball junior pitcher
Cole Zaffiro was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Zaffiro set a career-high with 10 strikeouts in 6.1 scoreless innings in the second game of the Quakers-Bulldogs weekend series at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
The Manhasset, N.Y. native struck out two batters in each of the first three innings, then struck out three more in the fourth, all without letting a runner past second base. He finished the weekend leading the Ivies with a 2.31 ERA for the season.
Penn's weekend rotation of
Owen Coady, Zaffiro, and
Ryan Dromboski have all struck out at least 10 batters in a game this season and all have been named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week at least once (Dromboski won the award each of the previous two weeks).
Penn has won at least one Pitcher/Player/Rookie award in each of the last seven weeks, the only Ancient Eight team to do so.
The Quakers travel to Rider on Wednesday before a trip up to Cornell next weekend, with the team currently tied with Columbia atop the Ivy League standings.
