Miles' Nine-Point Outing Guides #15 WLAX Past Bears, 18-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 15 University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team officially claimed the Ivy League regular-season title outright with an 18-5 thrashing at Brown on Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers, already locked in as the top seed and host of the Ivy League tournament the first weekend of May, remain the only unblemished record in the conference with a 6-0 tally while moving to 10-4 overall. It's the 17th time in program history that Penn has earned double-digit wins.

Quaker Notemeal
*With the victory, head coach Karin Corbett reached her 250th win at Penn.

*The Quakers are riding a five-game win streak, including two victories over top-25 opponents (No. 13 Yale, No. 24 Princeton).

*Senior Niki Miles ripped off a career-high nine points on seven goals and two assists to lead the offense. She is up to 46 goals and 11 assists for 57 points, moving her quickly up the single season record book. She currently ranks 14th in points and sixth in goals for a single season in program history. The program record in goals is 58, set in 1981 by Julie Heller and tied against in 2015 by Tory Bensen. Additionally, she extends her scoring streak to 15 games while remaining the only Quaker to score in all 14 contests this season.

*Miles also led the team in draws for the day with seven, while Aly Feeley pulled in five. The Quakers won the draw game, 19-8.

*There were nine Quakers that recorded at least a point in the game, including a five-point performance by sophomore Anna Brandt and four by sophomore Erika Chung. Brandt finished with four goals and an assist, while Chung added a goal and four assists.

*Junior Maria Themelis (2g) and senior Kennon Moon (1g, 1a) wrapped up the multi-point games. Themelis is currently riding a 12-game scoring streak, finding the back of the net in every contest this season except for the first two against La Salle and Johns Hopkins.

*Although the Bears scored the first two goals of the game, the backline held strong for 37 scoreless minutes after that, while giving up just three shots on target. Penn caused seven turnovers in the game led by sophomore Natasha Gorriaran and senior Grace Fujinaga with two each. The duo also paced the team in ground balls, each scooping three.

*Back in the net, senior Kelly Van Hoesen had a stellar 60-minute outing with six saves while surrendering just five goals. It's the second lowest amount of the season, only behind her clean sheet against La Salle in the season opener. She earned her 10th win of the season, maintaining a league-leading 10.21 goals-against average and 99 saves.

How It Happened
An early deficit for the Quakers gave some hope for the Bears after they scored two goals in the opening two minutes of the game. However, Penn had different thoughts. The Quakers answered with 13 straight goals that rolled to the 9:48 mark of the third quarter.

Chung was a catalyst in the beginning part of the run, contributing to the first four goals by Penn. She sent out assists to Caitlin Cook, Julia Chai, and Kennon Moon while scoring one of her own to give the Quakers a 4-2 lead by the 14:30 mark in the second, an advantage that didn't fade the rest of the way.

Following Moon's goal to give the 4-2 lead, Miles came to life. Her nine-point game kicked off with three straight goals, including back-to-back free-position goals. In the second quarter alone, she had four goals which eventually ballooned to seven for the day.

By the 6:50 mark of the third quarter, the Bears finally found the back of the net, but Miles connected on her seventh and final of the day before the end of the frame to give Penn a 14-3 advantage headed to the fourth.

Brown connected on back-to-back goals to open the final quarter, but that was the last they'd score the rest of the way. The Quakers, however, were not done yet. Themelis went back-to-back in the closing 10 minutes before Brandt and sophomore Grace Lillis put the final touches on the game.

The Quakers look to complete a perfect conference regular season next Saturday, hosting Dartmouth in Penn Park. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
