#18 MLAX Clinches Spot in ILT, Sends Seniors Out With 17–6 Win Against Dartmouth

PHILADELPHIA – Sending out its 17 seniors in style in their final home game, the No. 18 University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team never trailed in a 17-6 victory over Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field on Senior Day.

The Quakers led, 10-2, at halftime before emptying their bench in the second half and ending the game on a 7-4 run to come away with an 11-goal win.

With the victory, Penn secures a spot in the Ivy League Tournament for the eighth consecutive season. The Quakers improve to 6-5 overall with a 4-2 record in Ivy play while the Big Green fall to 6-5 and 1-4 in conference.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn clinches a spot in the Ivy League Tournament for the eighth straight season. The Quakers have had plenty of recent success in the ILT, winning the last two times the event was contested in 2019 and 2022.

*Penn is also locked into the 2-3 semifinal against either Princeton or Cornell in the first weekend of May. The Quakers are the second seed if Cornell beats Princeton or the third seed if Princeton beats Cornell when the two teams square off next Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. for the outright Ivy League title.

*James H. Greene, Jr. Head Coach Mike Murphy earned his 95th career victory at the helm of the Quakers.

*The Quakers finish the year with a 3-0 record at home, the first time since 2019.

*The victory over the Big Green marks the first time this season Penn has won back-to-back games.

*The six goals allowed is the least amount surrendered by Penn since April 20, 2019 also against Dartmouth at Franklin Field, a 22-6 victory.

*Three Quakers—Cam Rubin, Ben Smith and Sam Handley—scored four goals, totaling 12 of the team's 17 goals.

*Handley finished with a game-high six points, adding a pair of assists to his total.

*Tynan Walsh led the way with three helpers for four points (also scoring a goal).

*Piper Bond, Ryan McLaughlin and Peter Blake each registered a couple of caused turnovers.

*Bond also finished with a team-high five ground balls. Chris Arceri and BJ Farrare finished with four GBs.

*Four players went a combined 9-for-27 from the 'X.' Arceri was 8-of-17 on those opportunities.

*In goal, Emmet Carroll made 11 saves at a 78.6 percent clip, only facing 18 shots. That number is a career-high for the junior, who continues his strong season between the pipes. Senior Deven Varney came into the game to start the fourth quarter in his first-career appearance. He stopped four shots while allowing four goals.

*Penn out-shot Dartmouth, 45-30 and 25-21 on shots on goal. The Quakers turned the ball over just 14 times and were 22-for-25 on clears. Penn went 1-for-1 on extra-man opportunities, the Big Green 1-for-4.

How It Happened
Penn scored first via Sam Handley's 19th of the season on the assist from Tynan Walsh, but the Big Green answered back to tie the game at 1-1 with 12:04 to go.

That sparked seven straight goals for the Quakers, capped off by a man-up goal for Ben Smith, helped by Handley. With that, Penn rocketed out in front with an 8-1 advantage, 10:51 on the clock in the second quarter.

Dartmouth ended the 7-0 spurt with Colin McGill's 27th of the year, also on the man-up advantage as the Big Green cut into the deficit, trailing 8-2.

Cam Rubin and Handley scored back-to-back goals unassisted to end the first half, Penn leading 10-2.

Rubin and Smith continued the streak in the second half with three more out of the jump, taking a 13-2 edge with 4:04 to go in the third quarter.

The Big Green scored their first of the third after Brandon Ventarola found Nate Davis, cutting into Penn's 13-3 lead.

Luke DiGiacobbe scored his first goal of the year on the dish from Handley with 2:07 on the clock, extending the lead to 14-3. Handley made it 15-3 on his fourth goal of the game with 51 ticks left on the third-quarter clock.

Dartmouth got the fourth quarter going with its fourth goal of the day, but Rubin and Matt McMillen teamed up with 6:40 left to take a 16-4 lead and Paul Fortino scored his first-career goal with 3:51 to go, upping the Penn edge to 17-4.

The Big Green scored the final two goals of the game, but it was too little, too late as the Quakers held on for the 17-6 win.
