Fenton's Three-Run Homer Leads Softball to Game 1 Victory of Doubleheader Split

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team split its Ivy League doubleheader with Brown on Saturday. Sammy Fenton shined on both ends of the ball as she had a game-high four RBI and flashed the leather at short to turn potential hits into outs, including the game ending groundout. Penn rallied twice in game two to even the score but it was Brown who held on for a 4-2, 10th inning victory.

Dana Anderson recorded her first four hit game of her career as she was 4-for-5 with an RBI in game two. On the day, Brianna Brown was 6-for-9 at the plate with three stolen bases and three runs scored.

FINAL: Penn 5, Brown 4
Sarah Schneider struck for the first hit of the game to open the bottom of the second and then proceeded to steal her 25th career base. The Quakers loaded the bases with two outs but were unable to push a run across.

Brown used a trio of base hits to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

The Quakers responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. Brianna Brown and Danica Larwill pulled off a double steal to put Penn on the board.

Sammy Fenton sent a base hit to left field that scored Larwill from second.

The Bears responded with a run on an RBI base hit in the fourth and a run on an RBI fielder's choice in the fifth to regrow their lead back to two.

With two outs and a runner on, Bella Fiorentino put runners on the corners for the Quakers as she sent a base hit to center. The next batter, Fenton, already with an RBI hit in the game, sent a blast over the scoreboard in left field for a three-run home run to put the Quakers on top for good!

Kelly Zybura followed with a three-pitch sixth inning to put the Quakers back on offense.

Fenton flashed the leather in the first game as she made a diving stop near second base to flip the ball up to Dani Freer for the final out of the game and secure the win for Penn.

FINAL/10: Brown 4, Penn 2
The visitors stuck first in game two with a one-out bases loaded single to center for the early 1-0 lead. Payton Bean was able to regroup and get her second strikeout swinging of the inning and a pop up to second to end the top of the first.

Dana Anderson continued to mash the ball as she sent an RBI double to center field that scored Brianna Brown to tie the game at 1-1.

The pitchers took control of the game putting up zeroes on the board, until the Bears struck for a two-out RBI double to take a 2-1 lead.

The Quakers got some two-out magic as Sarah Schneider walked to load the bases and then with Penn down to its final strike, Bella Fiorentino drew the bases loaded walk to bring home the tying run.

Fiorentino pitched a quick 1-2-3 top of the eighth to put the bats back in the Quakers hands.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Quakers got runners on base as Alyssa Pope opened with a base hit to left and after the first out the next three batters all reached base. However, a base hit sandwiched in between two fielder's choices couldn't get the job done, stranding two runners.

Brown pushed across two runs in the top of the 10th on back-to-back RBI doubles for the eventual 4-2 win.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
  • The Quakers recorded 11 hits in game two as Dana Anderson (4), and Brianna Brown (3) combined for seven hits.
  • Brianna Brown was a combined 6-for-9 on the day as she had three hits in each game. This marked the second and third time this second she recorded a three-hit game.
  • Brown had three stolen bases in game one to give her 27 in her career. She is now tied with Keiko Uraguchi (2007-10) with seventh most in program history. With 18 stolen bases in 2023, Brown is now two shy of tying the single season program record of 20 set by Leah Allen in 2017.
  • Game two went 10 innings, the most a game has gone this season passing a nine-inning 3-2 loss to Oakland in March. Last season the Quakers played their longest game in over five years as an infield single gave Penn the 8-7 win in a 12-inning affair against Cornell.
