Baseball Scores 19 Runs in Dartmouth Doubleheader Sweep

HANOVER, N.H. – Middle and late inning magic sprung the University of Pennsylvania baseball team to a doubleheader Ivy League sweep of Dartmouth Sunday afternoon, taking Game 1 by a 10-6 final and Game 2, 9-4.

The Quakers scored five runs in the sixth inning of Game 1 and seven from the sixth inning on in Game 2.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
* Owen Coady took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in Game 1, finishing with a career-high-tying 11 strikeouts in 5.2 innings, extending his scoreless streak to 14 innings over his last three outings.

* Tommy Delany tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief in Game 1, his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance. The sophomore extended his scoreless inning streak to 8.2 innings.

* Cole Zaffiro allowed zero earned runs in 5.2 innings in Game 2, lowering his season ERA below 3.00.

* Penn's 1-5 hitters (Cole Palis, Jackson Appel, Ben Miller, Davis Baker, Wyatt Henseler) all hit safely in each game, finishing the day a combined 14-41 with 12 runs and 10 RBIs.

* Appel finished the day 4-9 with three triples, five runs, and a pair of RBIs.

* Penn's No. 8 and 9 hitters (Jarrett Pokrovsky and Seth Werchan) each finished the day with three hits, combining for five runs and four RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 1
Appel got things started for Penn with a one-out, stand up triple to right-center, later coming in to score on a single by Baker.

With two out and the bases empty in the second, Pokrovsky put himself in scoring position with an opposite field double. Next up stepped Werchan, who launched a no-doubt, two-run shot over the wall in right.

Coady was a different kind of unhittable early on. Between five strikeouts and four walks, Dartmouth did not put a ball in play until there were two outs in the second inning. The southpaw conceded another walk in the third before picking the runner off. He added two more punch outs in the fourth.

Singles from Pokrovsky and Werchan followed by a dropped pop fly off the bat of Palis led to another Penn run in the fifth before Penn blew the game open with five runs and five hits in the sixth. Baker led off with a single and took third on a base hit by Henseler. Taylor followed with an opposite-field double, scoring Baker.

With one out, Pokrovsky singled through an infield playing on the grass, plating Henseler and Taylor.

Palis made it 8-0 with a two-out double to right-center, later scoring on a wild pitch.

Dartmouth took a sizable chunk out of the deficit in the eighth, pulling within 9-6, but Penn tacked on another run in the top of the ninth and Delany retired the Big Green in order to close out the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 2
Zaffiro and Dartmouth Trystan Sarcone were dialed in early on, with neither allowing a hit and both facing the minimum through three, thanks in part to some strong defense from the Quaker infield.

Appel tripled with one out in the fourth and came in to score the first run of the game on a Baker single. Henseler made it 2-0 later in the inning with an RBI groundout.

Dartmouth took a 3-2 lead in the fifth, but Penn grabbed the lead right back in the sixth. Infield singles from Miller and Baker after an Appel walk loaded the bases with nobody out. Henseler plated Appel and moved Miller to third with a sacrifice fly; Miller later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

After a scoreless seventh, Penn added a few insurance runs in the eighth. Palis led off with a single and came in to score on Appel's second triple of the game.

Appel later scored on a Miller sacrifice fly, making it 6-3, and Henseler made it 7-3 with a moonshot to left-center.

Dartmouth pushed a run across in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate, but David Shoemaker stranded two men on, keeping Penn in front 7-4 heading to the 9th.

Justin Carboni, making just his sixth appearance and second start of the season, led off the ninth with a double. After Werchan walked, Palis sacrificed both runners into scoring position. One wild pitch and an RBI groundout later, the Quakers led 9-4.

After walking the leadoff batter, Carson Ozmer struck out three Big Green batters in a row to clinch the sweep.
