PHILADELPHIA – The 19th-ranked University of Pennsylvania wrestling team placed third and four more wrestlers secured their spots in Tulsa. Entering the second day of competition, Penn saw eight wrestlers place at the 119th EIWA Championships in The Palestra.
FINAL RESULTS
Ryan Miller won a pair of bouts on the opening day to advance to the semi-finals. Pitted against the #2 seed at 125 pounds, Patrick Glory of Princeton, Miller suffered his only defeat of the weekend, a 12-0 major decision. The sophomore bounced back in the consi-semis with a 4-1 decision over Columbia's Nick Babin to advance to the third-place bout. After a scoreless opening period, Miller used a late escape to lead 1-0 after the second period. In the final period, with 31 seconds remaining, he got two points in the takedown to claim third place with a 3-0 decision.
Michael Colaiocco cruised his way through the first day with a pair of major decisions to join Miller in the semi-finals. Colaiocco faced the #6 seed Angelo Rini of Columbia where he extended his streak of major decision wins to three to open the championships and advanced to the championship bout for a second straight season. Colaiocco's bid at a second-straight title at 133 came to an end as he took second place with an 8-0 major decision loss to Cornell's Vito Arujau.
Carmen Ferrante was the third Quaker to earn his spot in the semi-finals as he used a pair of decision wins on day one to advance. Ferrante secured his spot in the title bout at 141 pounds as he accumulated more riding time than his opponent, Darren Miller from Bucknell. The senior lost by major decision and took second place.
Doug Zapf found his way to the semi-finals with a major decision win and a decision win on day one of the championships. In the semi-finals, Zapf led 3-1 after the second period but third period saw his opponent secure five points on an escape, a takedown, and two near fall points to change the course of the bout in his favor. Zapf got a point back with less than a minute left but was unable to add to his total as he lost by an 8-4 decision to Dylan Chappell. With only two bids to Tulsa on the line at 149 pounds, he will have to hope for an at-large bid. Zapf rebounded and used a 9-3 decision over Drexel's Luke Nichter to earn a spot in the third place bout. In the third place bout, the senior took an early lead with a takedown but an escape by opponent from Army 20 seconds later cut his lead to just one. Three seconds into the second period, Zapf put lead back to two with an escape. An early third period escape put the score at 3-2 but Zapf held on to take third place.
A second period pin and a decision win by
Anthony Artalona on the first day put him in the semi-finals at 157 pounds. Artalona had to work for his 4-3 decision win in the semi-finals after taking a 1-0 lead on an escape to open the second period, his opponent from Army jumped out to a 3-1 lead with an escape and a takedown in a matter of nine seconds. In the final 76 seconds, Artalona battled for an escape and a takedown with six seconds left to secure his spot in the title bout at 157 pounds. The senior from Seffner, Fla. tied the championship bout at 4-4 with 31 seconds remaining in the third period but a quick escape and the extra point for riding time gave Lehigh's Josh Humphreys the 6-4 decision and the 157-pound title.
Following a quarterfinal loss to Columbia's Joshua Ogunsanya,
Lucas Revano bounced back with a 5-3 decision over Navy's Val Park on the first day of the championships. The Quaker junior lost in sudden victory in the consi round of four to land in the seventh-place bout at 165 pounds. Revano took seventh place with a 3-2 decision over Drexel's Evan Barczak.
Nick Incontrera found himself in the semi-final round after a pair of wins on Saturday, including an opening round major decision win over Bucknell's Sam Barnes. Army's Benjamin Pasiuk claimed an 8-4 decision over Incontrera in the semi-finals to drop him into the consi semis. Incontrera tied the bout at 1-1 with an escape early in the third period but could not overcome a takedown with 45 seconds remaining as he only managed an escape against Harvard's Philip Conigliaro. Incontrera finished in sixth place after medically forfeiting his fifth-place bout.
After suffering a sudden victory loss to Lehigh's Nathan Taylor on the opening day,
Ben Goldin bounced back with wins over Cornell's Brendan Furman and Binghamton's Cory Day to advance to the third-place bout. The senior from Orlando, Fla. finished in fourth place with a 7-1 decision loss to Harvard's Yaraslau Slavikouski to close out the championships.
