PHILADELPHIA – The 19th-ranked University of Pennsylvania wrestling team had a successful first day of the 119th EIWA Championships at The Palestra on Saturday. Eight Quakers are moving on to Sunday morning's semifinal round, highlighted by
Ryan Miller punching his ticket to the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Tulsa, Okla. later this month.
The round of 32 featured a lot of success for the Red and Blue as nine wrestlers walked off the mat victorious.
Anthony Artalona posted a second period pin over Brown' Sam McMonagle to advance. Miller,
Michael Colaiocco,
Doug Zapf, and
Nick Incontrera all earned major decision wins.
Carmen Ferrante,
Lucas Revano,
Maximus Hale, and
Ben Goldin all won by decision to send nine Quakers to the next round. The lone loss for Penn in the round of 32 was a first period pin of
Cole Urbas by Columbia's Jack Wehmeyer.
Following a successful first session, the Quakers will be well represented by six wrestlers in the semifinals. Miller, Colaiocco, Ferrante, Zapf, Artalona, and Incontrera will all wrestle for a chance to compete for their respective weight class titles.
Miller opened the second session of the day with a 6-1 decision over Army's Ethan Berginc to secure one of the six automatic bids at 125 pounds. Colaiocco earned his second major decision of the day with a 10-1 victory against Army's Rich Treanor. Ferrante secured his spot in the semi-finals with an 8-2 decision over the #3-seed, Navy's Josh Koderhandt. Penn's two #1 seeds, Zapf and Artalona advanced to the semi-finals in their new weight classes as both won by decision. Revano lost to Columbia's Josh Ogunsanya by a slim 6-5 decision but bounced back with a 5-3 decision over Navy's Val Park in the second consi round of 8. Incontrera put his name in the semi-finals with a 4-3 decision over Hofstra's Ross McFarland. Goldin lost in sudden victory to Lehigh's Nathan Taylor, 3-1 but with a 2-1 decision win over F&M's Vincenzo Pelusi he advanced to Sunday morning's consi semi-finals.
Hale lost his quarter-final and consi bouts as he was eliminated from the title chase at 184 pounds. Urbas bounced back in his first bout of the second session with a dominating tech fall over Brown's Aaron Wolk. He was then eliminated from the championship as he lost 6-2 to Drexel's Sean O'Malley.

The Red and Blue are back to the mat on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. for the semi-finals and quarterfinal consolations. The semi-final consolations and seventh place matches are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Tomorrow night's final session is set to begin at 4:45 p.m. with the first, third, and fifth place matches. Prior to the final session, the EIWA will induct four new members to its Hall of Fame with ceremony set to begin at 4:30 p.m. A pair of Penn Wrestling alum make up half the group as Clint Matter C'97 W'97 and Rick Springman EAS '02 Gr '09 are set to join a legendary group of EIWA Hall of Famers.
