Fourth-Quarter Struggles Cost #10 Men’s Lax in 15–9 Loss at #17 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A 9-8 third-quarter lead wasn't enough to lead the #10 University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team to victory on Saturday afternoon as seven straight goals including six in the fourth quarter brought #17 Penn State a 15-9 win at Panzer Stadium.

The Quakers were outscored, 6-0, in the fourth stanza including an extra-man opportunity for PSU and two empty net goals late in the quarter.

Penn falls to 1-2, dropping its last two contests while the Nittany Lions improve to 4-1 with two straight victories over Ivy League opponents, after knocking off Yale last weekend in New Haven.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn has lost back-to-back non-conference games for the first time since Feb. 29-Mar. 6, 2020. The Quakers fell, 18-17, in overtime to Penn State and 12-10 against Villanova in consecutive outings.

*The Quakers have now lost five of their last six games to PSU dating back to 2017. Penn has fallen in five straight games in Happy Valley since May 7, 1976.

*The six-goal deficit marks the first time in 10 defeats dating back to Feb. 23, 2019 (17-7 at Duke), the game wasn't decided by two goals or less.

*Senior captain James Shipley led the way with three goals for his second-career hat trick (Feb. 26, 2022 vs. Duke).

*Senior Robert Schain recorded the second two-goal game of his career and the first since he scored twice against Villanova on Mar. 6, 2020.

*Four others notched one goal, including junior Cam Rubin, who put away his eighth of the season, scoring in all three games to kick off 2023. Rubin has at least one goal in five straight games dating back to the end of last season.

*Handley had two assists to lead the Quakers, his second straight game with a pair. The Portland, Ore. native now has at least one point in 36 straight games.

*Left stranded at 99 career goals, senior Dylan Gergar was held goalless for the first time in 25 games, snapping the nation's third-longest streak. He, however, did finish with two assists for the second time this season. With that, Gergar extends his point-scoring streak to 26 straight games.

*Junior goalie Emmet Carroll allowed seven unanswered goals bridging the end of third quarter to the entire fourth, but stopped 16 shots with a save percentage of .516.

*Penn State out-shot Penn, 53-36, including 28-17 in the second half. The Nittany Lions led in shots on goal, 31-18 and 18-8 in the final 30 as well.

*The Quakers turned the ball over 10 times to Penn State's 9, while going a perfect 21-for-21 on clears.

*Penn's extra-man unit struggled mightily, especially in the fourth quarter, going 0-for-3 on such opportunities. The Nittany Lions were 1-for-4.

How It Happened
Penn State scored the first three goals of the game (two from Kevin Winkoff) to take an early 3-0 lead.

The Quakers quickly responded with four straight goals—two at the end of the first quarter and two at the beginning of the second—from Ben Smith, Hugh Mullane, Robert Schain and Sam Handley to get out to a 4-3 cushion. Handley assisted on two of the scores while Mullane's first-career goal was unassisted. Jack Posey converted on a pole goal for the Nittany Lions to tie the game up at 4-4 when Cam Rubin put away his first of the game, his eighth of the year, which was followed up by James Shipley's first of the contest to extend Penn's lead to 6-4.

PSU scored three of the next four goals in the third quarter to tie the game up at 7-7, while both teams went blow-for-blow over the next four minutes and change to send the Quakers into the locker room with a 9-8 halftime lead.

Penn State out-shot Penn, 25-19, over the first 30 minutes of game action, while goalie Emmet Carroll made eight saves, allowing just five goals.

The Quakers scored first in the third quarter at the 9:04 mark when Shipley tallied his second of the game, extending the lead to 7-5. Mac Costin and Winkoff went back-to-back in under a minute to square the score back at 7-7 when Schain recorded his second goal of the day (off the Dylan Gergar assist) to re-take the lead at 8-7 with 4:55 to go in the third. Just over 30 seconds late, Costin put away his second of the game to bring the score back to 9-9, which ignited the 7-0 run for the Nittany Lions the rest of the way.

Matt Traynor notched his ninth of the season on the man-up goal with 9:59 to go in the fourth, which kick started the first of six unanswered in the final period as Penn State held Penn goalless for a 15-9 final score.
