DURHAM, N.C. –
Vivian Lu and
Sabrina Cho earned Second Team All-America honors during the final day of competition at the NCAA Championships Sunday, with the University of Pennsylvania fencing programs posting their best finish since 2004.
Between the men Thursday/Friday and the women Saturday/Sunday, the Quakers won 117 bouts over, good for 6
th place, its highest finish at team championships since taking 6
th in 2004. The Quakers finished just four bout victories back of Ohio State, with Notre Dame, Princeton, Columbia/Barnard, and Harvard taking the top four spots. Penn was 27 victories clear of the next closest team.
In sabre, Lu finished with 15 wins in 23 bouts, taking sixth place, with weapon-mate
Hailey Lu taking 24
th after a four-win weekend. Cho also won 15 of 23 bouts, claiming sixth place, while fellow foilist
Katina Proestakis Ortiz won 10 bouts and took 15
th place. The epee duo of
Jessica Liang and
Shirley Guo won 10 bouts and six bouts, respectively, finishing 14
th and 21
st.
The women joined
Simon Kushkov (sabre),
Davide Lorenzoni (foil), and
Isaac Herbst (epee), who earned men's Second Team All-America earlier in the weekend.
Sunday wrapped competition for the 2022-23 season. The Quakers will return to the strips in the Fall of 2023.
