Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at UMES for First Wins of 2023

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team finally found itself on the winning end of a game and did it twice. The Quakers jumped out to big leads in both games. An 8-0 win in the first game gave interim head coach Dani Gonzales her first Penn head coaching win. Freshman pitcher Kelly Zybura recorded her first collegiate win as she picked up the victory in game one.

Five Quakers recorded multi-hit games, in game one Brianna Brown (3), Sarah Schneider (3) both had multi-hits. In game two, Madison Bauerle (4), Dana Anderson (3), Dani Freer (3), and Brown (2) combined for 12 of Penn's 18 hits.

FINAL/6: Penn 8, UMES 0
There were six scoring plays in the opening game and Sarah Schneider produced five RBI on four plays including a two run shot to left center, her second of the season.

In the second inning Madison Bauerle hit a base hit to right that scored Julia Mortimer and gave Penn a 2-0 lead. Penn doubled its lead as Brianna Brown doubled to left center to drive in Bauerle and Dani Freer. Schneider hit her home run in the bottom of the second to put the Quakers up 6-0.

Schneider added an RBI double to left in the fourth and then hit a sac fly in the sixth to put the Quakers up by 8-0.

Payton Bean made her first start of the season and worked around a base hit in the bottom of the first. Bean opened the second with a walk and worked a 2-2 count before exiting due to injury. Kelly Zybura came in to replace Bean and immediately allowed a base hit to right putting runners on first and second with no one out. That didn't faze her as she sent the next three batters down in order to strand the runners. Zybura retired the first two batters in the bottom of the third before the streak of five straight batters retired came to an end. She allowed just a single base runner over the final three frames as the Quakers closed in on win number one.

Zybura earned her first collegiate win and Blake Landow recorded her first collegiate hit in her first colleigate at-bat.

FINAL: Penn 12, UMES 3

With spirits flying high after finally winning their first game of the season, the Quakers jumped all over the UMES starting pitcher as the first five batters reached base. With the bases loaded Dana Anderson laced a two RBI double that scored Brown and Bauerle putting Penn up 2-0 early. The Quakers added two more runs on the next two plays as Schneider scored on a wild pitch and on an error, Fenton reached base and allowed Anderson to scored giving Penn a 4-0 first inning lead.

The Quakers scored two more runs in the top of the third inning as Julia Mortimer hit a sac fly to right, scoring Fenton, and Dani Freer followed with a double to left that scored Jillian Kuntze to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.

Penn added two more runs in the top of the fifth to put the lead at 8-0. Freer singled for her second hit of the game and Bauerle followed with a double.

Already up 4-0, Rachel Riley cruised through the Hawks order over the first four innings allowing no runs on just three hits. It wasn't till the bottom of the fifth that the home team got on the board for the first time on the day with a solo moonshot over the left field wall. This put the Penn lead under eight runs forcing a sixth inning.

Penn responded to the homer with a run of its own in the top of the sixth. Anderson hit a base hit up the middle to score Schneider putting the Quaker lead back up to eight.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, UMES scored two runs to pulled the Quaker lead back under the right run rule.
