PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team opened the newly renovated Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium with a bang Wednesday afternoon, setting a season high in runs and matching its season high in hits during a 15-5, seven-inning win over Philly foe Villanova.
The Quakers lineup was top-to-bottom dominant, with all nine starters scoring at least once, eight of nine recording at least one hit, and eight of nine driving in at least one run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Starting pitcher
John Cerwinski worked through early trouble in the first inning, turning second and third with nobody out into a scoreless frame with a strikeout and two pop outs.
Villanova put a two-spot on the board in the second, but Penn came right back in the bottom half of the inning. After
Calvin Brown walked and stole second and
Asa Wilson was hit by a pitch, Taylor doubled to center field, scoring Brown.
Seth Werchan followed with a game-tying RBI single.
The score remained 2-2 until the fifth, despite the teams combining to leave 12 runners on base through the first four innings.
Villanova put two more on the board in the fifth and added another un in the sixth, carrying a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth, when the Penn offense kicked up several notches
Taylor tripled down the right field line to start the inning and came into score on a Werchan groundout. Appel followed with a double to center and came around to score on a
Ben Miller single.
After a
Wyatt Henseler single, and a
Davis Baker walk, Brown walked, forcing home Miller with the tying run. After Villanova went to the bullpen,
Jarrett Pokrovsky greeted the new pitcher with a tiebreaking two run single to right field. After a wild pitch moved Brown and Pokrovsky up 90 feet,
Asa Wilson singled home Brown, putting Penn up 8-5.
Taylor followed with a double to right, scoring Pokrovsky, and Appel knocked in Wilson and Taylor with a single to right.
Baker's second walk of the inning, this time with the bases loaded, capped the 10-run frame, with 16 men coming to the plate.
Thanks to a two-strike wild pitch, Delany recorded four swinging strikeouts in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Pokrovsky, Taylor, and Werchan all walked to load the bases. After Appel singled home Pokrovsky and Taylor, Werchan scampered home on a wild pitch, ending the game.
