PHILADELPHIA – Owen Coady was in command for the University of Pennsylvania baseball team over seven innings Friday afternoon against Massachusetts, but one big swing in the sixth inning proved to be the difference for the Minutemen in a 1-0 win from Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
* Coady struck out a career-high 11 hitters, breaking his previous top mark of 10, set against Wagner nearly a year ago to the day (March 19, 2022).
* Scattering just three hits across the seven frames, Coady lowered his opponent batting average to just .165.

Carson Ozmer struck out two in two scoreless innings of relief. He's allowed one earned run in his last four appearance spanning 9.1 innings, a 0.96 ERA.

Ben Miller went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to eight games.
*
Wyatt Henseler went 1-for-3, running his hitting streak to six games.
* The teams completed the game in one hour and 56 minutes, Penn's quickest nine-inning contest since a 2-0 affair against Cornell on April 22, 2017 that lasted one hour and 40 minutes.
* Penn has now played two 1-0 games this season after going more than 80 games and nearly four years without playing one (Princeton -- April 13, 2019).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Coady recorded three strikeouts in the first two innings, with two coming in the first.
After two UMass fly outs and a groundout in the third, Coady struck out three more across the fourth and fifth innings.
Penn's best scoring threat came in the fourth. Henseler reached on an infield single to lead off, advancing to second on a one-out wild pitch.
Cole Palis followed with a walk, putting two runners on for the first time all game, but UMass starter Max LeBlanc escaped the threat with a line-drive double play.
With two out in the sixth, after Coady recorded his seventh strikeout of the day, Coady yielded a solo homerun to dead center off the bat of Mike Gervasi, as the Minutemen took the lead.
Coady closed out his day in style, striking out the side in the seventh inning, letting out an emphatic roar as he walked back to the dugout.
Penn put men on in the sixth, seventh, and ninth, but could not advance any of them beyond second base, as the Minutemen closed out the game.
