Miller's Big Night Not Enough as Baseball Falls 8-5 at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Ben Miller hit a pair of home runs, but a late-inning surge by Tulane gave the Green Wave an 8-5 win over the University of Pennsylvania in the second of a three-game set Saturday night.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
* Miller's monster game was the first multi-home run game of the year for a Quaker, and gave Miller four home runs for the year; Miller didn't hit his fourth home run last season until the team's 24th game.

* Starting pitcher Cole Zaffiro struck out a career-high eight batters over 4.1 innings. Giving him 19 over 13.1 innings this season.

* Asa Wilson went 2-for-4, hitting safely for the first time this season after an 0-for-6 start to 2023.

* Freshman Davis Baker recorded his third straight multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4, raising his average over .380.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Appel led off the game with a stellar at-bat, falling behind 0-2 before fouling off four pitches while working a 10-pitch walk. Miller followed with a two-run bomb to left field, as the Quakers scored in the first for the third time in four games.

Tulane put runners on the corners with two out in the first, but a great catch from Calvin Brown kept the Green Wave off the board.

Penn tacked on another run in the second, when Appel singled in Calvin Brown, who had walked, then advanced to second on a Wilson single.

The Green Wave got on the board with a solo shot in the third, then tied the game with a two-run shot in the fourth. Miller instantly untied the game with his second four-bagger of the day leading off the fifth.

Six straight batters reached for Tulane in a four-run sixth, as the Green Wave grabbed a 7-4 lead. In the eighth, Henseler hit a solo shot well beyond the centerfield wall, cutting the deficit to two, but Tulane got the run right back in the bottom of the inning.

Penn went down in order in the ninth as Tulane evened the series at a game apiece.

Up Next
The rubber game of the series between the teams is tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM ET / 1 PM CT, Penn's final road game before its home opener Wednesday against Villanova.
