Softball Drops Two on Final Day of Wolfpack Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped both games on the final day of the 2023 Wolfpack Classic hosted by North Carolina State University on Sunday morning. The Quakers and the East Tennessee State Bucs completed the suspended game from Saturday and then played the regularly scheduled game on Sunday. ETSU won the first game 5-1 and held off a late Penn rally to win 7-3 in game two.

FINAL: ETSU 5, Penn 1
Brown singled with one out in the top of the first and stole second on the next pitch. After a walk to Fiorentino, Brown tagged up and made it safely to third on a foul out to first base. The runners were stranded as the next batter hit a hard shot at the pitcher who fielded it to first for the final out.

ETSU took a 2-0 lead after two innings on a first-inning two-out bases loaded walk and an RBI base hit in the second. The damage was limited to two runs as the final outs of the first two innings were ground outs to the short and second.

Sammy Fenton put the Quakers on the board in the top of the third inning as she laced a two-out RBI double down the left field line to score Bauerle and cut the lead ETSU lead to one.

The Bucs added a pair of runs on a sac fly and a ground out in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the third out was made the game was suspended due to weather in the area. The game will resume in the top of the fifth inning at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Following a nearly 20-hour delay, the Quakers and the Bucs resumed play in the top of the fifth inning. Over the final two and a half innings the Bucs scored one run and held the Quaker batters hitless to earn the 5-1 win. A Julia Mortimer walk with two outs in the top of the sixth was the only base runner Penn could manage.

FINAL: ETSU 7, PENN 3
The Bucs opened the game with a pair of one-out base hits up the middle right at the Quaker starting pitcher Zybura before she was able to get a ground out an a strikeout to end the first inning threat.

Dana Anderson gave the designated home team an early lead with an RBI base hit in the bottom of the first inning that scored Brianna Brown from third.

ETSU tied the game in the top of the third inning on a base hit up the middle and took a 4-1 lead through the top of the fourth. The Quakers got on run back in the bottom of the fifth as Anderson dropped an RBI base hit in shallow centerfield, cutting the Bucs lead to 5-2. Her second RBI of the game.

A pair of solo shots in the top of the sixth extended the Bucs lead to 6-2. Just as it looked like the Quakers were going to put up a zero on the board ETSU laced an RBI base hit down the left field line to push its lead to 7-2.

The Quakers threatened in the final half inning as the tying run came to the plate with two outs. Sammy Fenton singled up the middle to score Schneider and Delaney Smith walked to load the bases. The ETSU pitcher got one past Mortimer with a full count to end the threat and limit the Quakers rally to a single run in the seventh.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
  • In the second game on Sunday, eight Quakers tallied for 11 total hits. Brianna Brown, Sarah Schneider, and Dana Anderson all had a multi-hit game. Anderson was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Katie Reagan and Sarah Schneider had quality defensive plays in the second game vs. ETSU. Reagan made a nice catch at the wall that potentially prevented multiple runs from scoring and in the same half inning made a long running catch to end the Bucs threat. Schneider was quick to get the out as she stayed with a foul ball behind the plate and made the out on the opening batter of the top of the fourth.

UP NEXT
Next weekend, the Red and Blue are back on the road as they head to the Sunshine State for a three-city 11-game road trip with stops in Boca Raton, Tampa Bay, and Orlando (March 3-10).
