Pitching Dominates As Baseball Drops 1-0 Affair To #23 South Carolina

Columbia, S.C. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team limited high-scoring South Carolina to just three hits, but a second-inning home run proved to be the difference as the Quakers fell 1-0 in their second game of the 2023 opened up their 2023 season Saturday.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
* The 1-0 final marked the first such game for Penn since April 13, 2019 against Princeton, a win for the Quakers

* Starter Cole Zaffiro set a new career high with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.

* David Shoemaker tossed a career-high 3.1 innings, matching his career high with five strikeouts.

* Jackson Appel recorded a hit for the second straight game, and 37th time in 44 starts dating back to the start of last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Zaffiro recorded all three outs in the first via strikeout, working his way out of trouble after a one-out triple and two-out walk.

In the Penn second, Cole Palis reached on a one-out error, stole second with one out, then third with two out, but that was as far as he got as South Carolina starter Noah Hall recorded two of his 12 strikeouts in the inning. Zaffiro conceded a solo shot in the bottom of the frame.

The teams put runners on in the bottom of the third, both halves in the fourth, the bottom of the fifth, the top of the sixth, both halves of the seventh, and the bottom of the eighth, but strong pitching and defense stranded eight runners in all during that stretch.

Penn had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but Hall navigated his way out each time. Matthew Becker came in for South Carolina in the top of the ninth and closed out the win.
