ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania's men's (16-8) and women's (19-8) fencing teams travel to Cornell University this weekend for the 2023 Ivy League Round-Robins.
Previewing Penn
On the women's side, the Quakers will be the #4 seed at the Round-Robins (Princeton #1, Columbia #2, Harvard #3). Each weapon group has at least 17 wins in 27 matches, led by the epeeists who enter the weekend 19-8. The sabre contingent heads to Ithaca 18-9 for the season, with the foil squad checking in at 17-10.
Nine fencers have won at least 25 matches and 57 percent of their bouts this season, including three who have won 40+ matches with similar percentages.

Jessica Liang has won 48 matches, putting her career win total at 153, while blade-mate
Chloe Daniel is right behind her with 44, pushing her career win total to 148.
Foilist
Talia Becker Calazans has competed in just 31 bouts this season but has come out victorious in 25 of them. Weapon-mate
Katina Proestakis Ortiz also has 25 wins (in just 39 matches), already surpassing her 21 victories from last season.
Sabrina Cho leads the group with 34 victories in 42 matches, also surpassing her win total from last season (30). The four winningest sabreists have combined for more than 130 victories this season, led by
Hailey Lu, whose 41 victories are four times more than her 10 from last season.
Sarah Hilado is right behind Lu with 35 wins, tops among all freshmen on the team. Checking in at 28 victories apiece are
Sapphira Ching and
Vivian Lu.
The women have faced two Ivy League foes this season, falling 20-7 to Columbia at the Penn State Invitational on January 15 and defeating Yale 19-8 two weeks ago at the Tri-State Shark Showcase.
The men will also be the #4 seed at Round-Robins weekend (Columbia #1, Harvard #2, Princeton #3). The foilists have won 12 of their last 14 bouts, running their season mark to 18-6. The sabreists come into the weekend 16-8 and the epeeists arrive at 12-12.
Epeeist
Avery Townsend has made a remarkable impact in his freshman season, picking up a team-high 43 victories. Fellow freshman
Simon Kushkov has won 40 bouts for the sabreists, and the foil duo of
Blake Broszus and
Eric Yu have won 55 bouts.
The Quakers have faced both Columbia and Yale this season, dropping close bouts to each.
What's in Store
The Quaker men will compete in four total bouts, while the Quaker women will compete in six (Cornell and Brown fielding just women's teams). Team results will determine the winner of the Ivy League Championship, but individual performances will determine the awarding of All-Ivy honors. The top three finishers in each weapon will be named first-team All-Ivy, while finishers ranking 4th – 6th will be named second-team All-Ivy.
