PHILADELPHIA – Junior
Adrian Montemayor was named CSFL Special Teams Player of the Year for second straight season when the league office announced its awards slate for the 2023 campaign on Tuesday afternoon. In addition, seven Quakers earned a total of eight All-CSFL honors.
It's the third straight season a Penn player was named Special Teams Player of the Year following Montemayor in 2022 and Brendan McCaffrey in 2021.
Special Teams Player of the Year
Montemayor continued to show why he was one of the program's most important players after another solid campaign as the placekicker and punter. He went 2-for-3 on field goal attempts in 2023, converting on all nine of his extra-point tries. Montemayor averaged 32 yards per punt, downing 10 punts inside the 20-yard line, with two going more than 50 yards.
First Team
In addition to his major award, Montemayor also earned first-team All-CSFL laurels on offense (at kicker) and defense (at punter).
Joining the specialist was junior linebacker
Jake Inserra, who finished with the second-most tackles (43) on the team with 3.5 tackles for loss and an interception.
Second Team
Cam Janock was special for the Quakers in 2023, earning All-CSFL honors for an incredible season in which he led the team in tackles (44), TFLs (8.0) and sacks (4.5). He also had a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Luke Pajovich did an exemplary job protecting quarterback
Ty Scherer this year, especially as a freshman offensive lineman. The Quakers' run game averaged 106 yards per game including 274 for Scherer on 92 carries.
Josh Johnson earned All-CSFL as Penn's primary kick returner, returning 11 kickoffs for a total of 185 yards. He took back a long kick of 42 yards earlier in the year, averaging 16.82 yards per return.
Honorable Mention
Penn picked up two honorable mention All-CSFL nods, the first being sophomore tight end
Sam Herzog. Herzog made the transition over from the offensive line, totaling 13 catches for 92 yards and a touchdown on the year.
The other All-CSFL selection,
Charles Tauckus started all six games on defense, racking up 38 tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack. He also finished with two pass breakups and a hurry.
