Men's and Women's Squash Move to 7-0 With Wins Against Williams

PHILADELPHIA- The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's squash teams picked up a pair of wins on Sunday at the Penn Squash Center, moving to 7-0 and closing out play for the calendar year.  

The fifth-ranked women's team defeated Williams 9-0, while the top-ranked men took down Williams 7-2. This wraps up non-conference play for the Quakers, as Ivy League action begins on January 19.

Franka Vidovic, Grace Lavin and Kelsey Abbrecht saw the court first for the women against Williams. Vidovic, playing in the number one spot, took an early command of her match, picking up an 11-4 victory in game one, in game two Vidovic extended the lead 9-2, and never relinquished throughout the match, picking up the sweep.

 Lavin was able to battle in her first game, winning 11-9 but then breezed through games two and three to grab the victory in 22 minutes. Abbrecht had the quickest match of the day on the women's side, sweeping her opponent in just 17 minutes.

Jana Dweek, Emma Carter and Emma Wolf were featured in wave two for the Quakers. Carter powered through the first two games of the match, picking up an 11-2 and an 11-3 win, which helped propel the sweep.

 Dweek was able to build a 7-5 lead in game one, pulling away with an 11-7 win. Dweek then edged out her opponent in games two and three to secure the win. After mustering an 11-9 win in game one, Wolf was able to obtain an 8-6 lead in game two, taking the game 11-7. Although Wolf dropped game three, she was able to grab the win with an 11-7 victory in four games.

Rounding out the day for the Quakers was Natasha Pensler, Penelope Oh and Abbie Rorke. After dropping the initial game, Rorke was able to pull away with a 7-1 lead in game two picking up the win 11-4. Rorke went point-for-point with her opponent in game three, powering through for the 14-12 win, eventually leading to the match victory in four games.

Pensler dropped the opening game as well, but bounced back, holding her opponent to just 10 combined points across the next three games, while picking up the win in four. Oh ran away with game one, then battled 14-12 in game two, earning the sweep in three games and 23 minutes.

As for the men, Omar Hafez, Oliver Green and Ben Mathias were the first to see the court. Penn's number one, Hafez, edged out his opponent 11-8 in game one, but was able to grab the sweep in three games and 34 minutes.

Green amassed an 8-1 lead in game one, surrendering only a singular point in the 11-1 victory. Green limited his opponent to a combined five points between the next two games, while picking up the sweep. Mathias won the first two games 11-7 and 11-4, but dropped the next three, falling in five games and the longest match of the day at one hour and eight minutes.

Shaam Gambhir, Dana Santry and Rehan Luthra represented wave two for the Quakers. Gambhir grabbed sizable wins in the first two games, then dropped the next two, forcing a game five. Jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the final game helped propel Gambhir to the victory.

Santry edged out his opponent 11-7 in game one, and then followed suit in games two and three earning the sweep in 25 minutes. Luthra fell in game one, salvaged game two 11-4 but then dropped two straight games to relinquish the match in four.

Lastly, Varun Chitturi, Abdelrahman Dweek and Jat Tse closed out the day for the Quakers. Chitturi breezed through the first two games and picked up an 11-8 win in game three to seal the deal in the sweep.

 Dweek held his opponent to just two points in the opening game, in route to his 29-minute sweep. Tse took game one 11-6, and created an 8-4 lead in game two, eventually picking up the sweep in three games.
