PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team's
Alex Almeyda enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in the Quakers' victory at the PRTC Keystone Classic at The Palestra last weekend, resulting in Penn Athletics Student-Athlete of the Week honors.
Almeyda won the title at 133 lbs. on Sunday, picking up two ranked victories in the process, earning a 3-2 decision over Utah Valley's Haiden Drury in the finals. Almeyda defeated #24 Mason Leiphart (Frankin & Marshall) by decision, 6-0, in the semifinals after a 2-1 decision over Appalachian State's #17 Ethan Oakley in the quarters. Almeyda started the day with an 8-0 major decision win over Virginia Tech's Logan Frazier.
The first year was one of four Quakers that earned championships on Sunday night, joining fellow freshman
Max Gallagher (125),
CJ Composto (141) and
Nick Incontrera (174) on top of the podium.
Penn's dual meet slate begins next Friday, Dec. 1 at The Palestra against Iowa at 7 p.m.
