Princeton Tops Women’s Soccer, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA- The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season at Penn Park on Wednesday evening, 1-0 against Princeton. After a 0-0 score at the break, the Tigers got on the board minutes into the second half and that score held the rest of the way.

Penn fell to 5-5-2 overall and remains winless in Ivy League play at 0-2-1. Princeton, which has spent time nationally ranked this season, improved to 7-2-2 overall and is 2-1-0 in Ivy play.

*Freshman Abbey Cook had two shots, one being on frame.

*Senior goalie Laurence Gladu made four saves while allowing just the one goal, her eighth surrendered this season.

*Four different Quakers fired off shots, one each from Magali Capdevila, Clare Robke and Megan Lusher, with Cook taking two.

How it Happened
Cook had the first two shots of the match for the Quakers, as she put two on frame in the first half, but the Tigers keeper was able to make multiple stops.

The teams were knotted up at the half, 0-0, as neither team had many scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes although the Tigers edged the Quakers 5-2.

Action picked up quickly at the start of the second half, when Penn had a corner kick and the ball was played back to Maya Leschly, who nearly went top shelf as the Tigers keeper made the save.

Two minutes later at the other end, Gladu made a nice save on a shot taken right in front of the 12-yard box to keep the game level.

However, the Tigers were able to get on the board just a minute later, Drew Coomans outracing a Penn player to a long ball over the top and firing her shot into top left corner. Gladu had not chance on the rocket.

The Tigers had a chance to add to their lead when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, but Pietra Tordin's PK ricocheted off the top of the crossbar and the Quakers were able to come away unscathed.

Although Penn was able to fire off three shots in the second half, the Quakers could not find the back of the net. At the other end, Gladu did her part to keep Penn in it with another key save late.

Quotables
"Great first half for us. In the second half, I thought Princeton took control of the game and we defended for longer stretches. We competed and continue to improve. We will regroup and be ready for Saturday at Brown." – Dr. Krissy Turner, Douglas N. Brush Head Coach of Women's Soccer.
