FH Outlasts Princeton, 3–2, in Double OT To Remain Unbeaten in Ivy Play

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophie Freedman's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time. She found the back of the net in the closing stages of the second overtime period as the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team knocked off Princeton on the road, 3-2.

Notably, the win was the Quakers' first over the Tigers since 2004, snapping a series-long 17 game losing streak to the regional foe, and just its second dating all the way back to the 1993 season.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn remains one of two unbeaten Ivy League teams at 3-0, joining Harvard at the top of the conference standings.

*The win is the Quakers' first over Princeton since 2004 and just the second since 1993. In 2004, Penn earned a share of the Ivy League title with Harvard.

*Penn went to OT for the fourth time this season and double OT for the second time in the last three games. The Quakers are 2-2 in OT/shootout games this season.

*Allison Kuzyk, who scored Penn's second goal on Wednesday, has now scored in six consecutive games—and seven of her last eight—scoring seven goals during that stretch. She has a team-high eight tallies so far this year.

*Lis Zandbergen had an assist on two of the Quakers' three goals in the win, tying a team high for the year. She now has five career helpers.

*Frederique Wollaert made seven saves between the pipes in getting the win.

*Shots were tied, 18-18, with the edge in shots on goal going the way of the Quakers (14-9). Penn also led Princeton with nine penalty corners.

How It Happened
Penn was active early on the offensive end with four shots on goal—with two for Courtney Kenah back-to-back—and found the back of the net just 13 minutes into the game, Emily Stafford finishing off the Zandbergen assist. That gave the Quakers an early 1-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Kuzyk tried to extend the lead with eight minutes remaining, but couldn't get past the keeper. At the other end, Wollaert denied Princeton twice to keep it 1-0 heading into the locker room for the halftime break.

Kuzyk scored Penn's second goal of the contest just 47 seconds into the start of the third period, assisted by Zandbergen for the second time. It then looked like the Quakers had tacked on a third goal for a 3-0 lead, but Princeton challenged successfully for a review. That kept the score at 2-0.

Bolstered by the reversal, Princeton broke through with its first goal at the 6:04 mark and then again five minutes later to equalize with 1:47 remaining in the third stanza.

The Tigers nearly took the lead with seven minutes to play in the fourth, but a sequence of challenging saves from Wollaert kept Princeton at bay. Freedman nearly gave the Red and Blue the victory with 26 seconds on the clock but couldn't quite find the opening around Robyn Thompson.

Just like how the fourth quarter ended, Kuzyk had a last-second chance to close the first overtime, sending the game to a second OT at 2-2.

Coming through in the clutch once again, Wollaert made one of the saves of the season with just over four minutes to play to keep it deadlocked. That set up a final Quaker chance late in the period. Converting on yet another penalty corner, Freedman closed in on the net and sent home a reverse shot for her first tally of the year that gave Penn the hard-fought victory.

Quotables
"Such a great team win. This team has been putting in the work and has never wavered in confidence or mindset. This win means a lot to the team and all of the women who have worn the Red and Blue. The journey is far from over, though, and we will continue to learn from this game and others." - Colleen Fink, Head Coach

"Going into the game, our team had a great mindset and were excited for the weekday matchup. The team battled the whole game, and when I got the opportunity to go in late in the second overtime I knew it was time to finish. On the corner, Princeton's flyer came out quick but I got the rebound and shot it hard into the goal." - Sophie Freedman, junior midfielder
