PHILADELPHIA- After trailing 1-0 at the end of the first half, the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team came from behind to beat Cornell 2-1 on Senior Day.
The Quakers picked up their first Ivy League win, finishing the season with a 6-7-3 record and 1-4-2 in conference play. The Big Red close out their season with a 4-5-6 record and 0-5-2 in league play.
Quaker Notemeal
*Penn was outshot by Cornell 15-9, with the Big Red putting nine shots on frame compared to four by the Quakers.
*Freshman Mia Fuss scored her first colligate goal in the 56th minute, as she let one fly beyond the 18-yard box to level the match 1-1.
*Freshman Abbey Cook scored her third goal of the season in the 79th minute, registering the first game-winning goal of her young career.
*Senior goalkeeper Laurence Gladu made eight saves in net to close out her Quaker career.
*Cornell took six corner kicks compared to Penn's two.
*Prior to the match the Quakers honored their nine seniors. Adrienne Evans, Ginger Fontenot, Gladu, Paige Kenton, Maya Leschly, Madison Liebman, Julia Olander, Reese Sutter and Lauren Teuschl.
*The Quakers picked up their first Ivy League win of the season, and first conference victory since 2021 where Penn finished 3-4 in conference play.
*Head Coach Dr. Krissy Turner earned her first Ivy League victory of her career at Penn after completing her second year at the helm of the Quakers.
*At 6-7-3 and 1-4-2, Penn finished its season surpassing last year's record of 3-6-7 and 0-5-2 in Ivy League play.
*The Quakers move to 21-7-4 all-time against the Big Red.
How it Happened
Within the first six minutes of the match, the Quakers defended three corner kicks taken by the Big Red, where Gladu made one save and the rest of the backline protected the back of the net.
The Quakers got their first try with a corner in the 19th minute but could not register a shot on frame.
Gladu was forced to make two saves within six minutes before the Quakers could register a shot on target.
Just before the 30-minute mark in the first half, Teuschl took a line-drive shot but was corralled by the Big Red's keeper to keep the game scoreless.
At the 38th minute, Cornell's Sydney Malaga was able to net one from distance on an empty net to give the Big Red the lead nearing the end of the first half.
Early in the second half, Gladu made a key stop on another corner attempt from Cornell, to keep the game within one score.
Fuss powered a shot passed the diving attempt of the Big Red's keeper, finishing in the top left corner for the first tally of her career, evening the score at 1-1.
The intensity picked up between the Ivy League foes as Penn was beginning to shut down scoring opportunities from Cornell.
With just over 11 minutes remaining in the match, Cook got a feed downfield and had one defender and the keeper to beat. The Big Red's goalie came out of the box, stopping Cook's initial attempt, but Cook was successful on her second try on the empty net.
The Penn defense was able to hold down in the final minutes of the match to win 2-1 and complete the second-half comeback.
