Dingle's Virtuoso Performance Spurs MBB Past Columbia, 84-55

NEW YORK CITY – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team rebounded from a disappointing loss in style on Saturday night, rolling to an 84-55 win at Columbia.

The Quakers were led by a virtuoso performance from junior Jordan Dingle, who scored 33 points and did it every which way on Saturday. Overall, the junior guard shot 11-of-17 from the field including a 7-of-9 performance from beyond the arc.

Penn improved to 9-8 overall and is 2-1 after three Ivy League road games. Columbia fell to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in Ivy play.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn has won five in a row at Columbia, its longest streak at Levien since winning eight straight from 1993-2000.

*The 29-point margin was Penn's largest in an Ivy League win since an 87-55 win over Columbia on January 14, 2006, and the Quakers' largest win in an Ivy League road game since an 83-48 win at Brown on February 5, 2000.

*Penn improved to 8-0 this season when holding its opponent below 70 points and 6-0 when making more three-pointers than its opponent (Penn 15, Columbia 6).

*Penn shot 52.9 percent from the field overall, its third-best performance this season.

*The Quakers were a staggering 15-of-23 from beyond the arc; the 15 treys were one shy of their season high at Missouri (which is also tied as the program record).

*Penn's 65.2-percent shooting on threes was the best performance since the Quakers shot 66.7 percent (8-12) at Kentucky on January 3, 2010.

*Penn tied a season high against a Division 1 opponent with 21 assists.

*Penn had a +11 margin on the boards, with 41 to Columbia's 30; that margin is a season high.

*Dingle's 33-point performance was his third 30-point game this season and his ninth at Penn.

*Dingle has now reached the 20-point mark in 13 straight games and has hit double digits in 24 straight contests, tied for the seventh-longest streak in program history with Zack Rosen.

*Senior Jonah Charles was the only other Penn player in double figures, scoring 14 points; he was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field this weekend, six of the baskets coming from beyond the arc.

*Senior Michael Moshkovitz dished out nine assists, a season/career high, and added four rebounds and a steal.

*Sophomore Nick Spinoso finished with nine points and a game-high seven rebounds, while senior Max Lorca-Lloyd had six boards and four points.

*Junior Clark Slajchert had his double-figure scoring streak end at seven games—barely—as he finished with nine points in just 24 minutes of action.

*Junior Max Martz had six points and dished out a season-high three assists.

How It Happened
Columbia held an early 9-4 lead after Avery Brown hit a three-pointer, but Penn took over from there and never took the foot off the gas. The Quakers scored on four straight possessions to go in front, 14-9, and kept the run going until it was 15-0 and the Red and Blue's lead was 19-9 eight minutes in. It was still an 11-point game when Slajchert pulled up for a jumper, then Dingle drained a long trey. That made the score 34-18 with five minutes still left in the half, To its credit, Columbia halved Penn's lead down to eight in the final three minutes, and it was still a single-digit margin (39-30) at the half.

Jake Tavroff then opened the second-half scoring for the Lions, making the score 39-32, but Dingle rained down a three-pointer and that set Penn off on a 12-0 run that took a little more than three minutes. Tavroff finally broke Columbia's drought, but Dingle drove the lane for a bucket and after another defensive stop Slajchert rolled into the lane and finished a Moshkovitz feed. The Quakers' run was 16-2, their lead was 55-34, and this game was essentially over.

Penn's lead reached 30 points with 9:20 still left and crested at 32 (72-40) on a Dingle free throw with 8:04 to play. Dingle was taken out after that foul shot to a standing ovation from the Quakers fans in the crowd of nearly 2,000.

Penn has two more Ivy League games next weekend, starting Saturday when the Quakers are at Dartmouth for a 2 p.m. tipoff. The Red and Blue then play their Ivy League home opener on Monday, hosting travel partner and archrival Princeton at 7 p.m.
