PHILADELPHIA – Young Family Head Coach of Fencing
Andy Ma surpassed 500 career victories at the University of Pennsylvania as the Quaker men's and women's fencing teams totaled 12 victories in 14 matches Saturday during day one of the Philadelphia Invitational from the Tse Center.
Entering the day with 499 wins, Ma blazed past the milestone mark, finishing the day with 511, courtesy of outstanding showings from both programs.
The women, #19 in the United States Fencing Coaches' Association (USFCA) poll, won all seven of their matches, knocking off two teams higher-ranked teams (#13 Duke, #18 Wagner), adding a third Top 25 win (#24 NJIT), taking at least 20 bouts in five of the seven matches. The Quakers dropped just a single bout across the first two matches against FDU and Lafayatte, then ran off three straight ranked wins over the Highlanders, the Blue Devils, and the Seahawks. Penn closed out the day with victories over NYU and Sacred Heart.
The #9 men opened the day with four straight Top 25 opponents. The Red and Blue defeated #5 Johns Hopkins 14-13, downed #15 Lafayette 25-2, and dropped #19 NJIT 17-10 before dropping a razor-thin 14-13 clash with #21 Duke.
The Red and Blue ended their afternoon sandwiching definitive victories over Haverford (21-6) and #23 Sacred Heart (19-8) around another close loss to #11 NYU (12-15).
The women will compete in five more matches tomorrow and the men will compete in three to wrap the weekend.
