Field Hockey Drops 4-0 Decision To No. 2 UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team wrapped up its trip to Carolina on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 2 UNC at Karen Shelton Stadium.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn held one of the highest scoring teams in the country to four goals, a squad that returned a lot of offensive power from last year that scored nine goals against the Quakers.

*Junior Hayley Hayden started her first collegiate game in the cage, making a career-high nine saves.

*The Quakers had five shots in the game, two on target. Senior Gracyn Banks led the attempts with two, while Elita Van Staden, Lis Zandbergen, and Livia Loozen each had one.

*The Tar Heels had a slight edge in penalty corners, 5-3.

How It Happened
The first quarter played into the favor of UNC, getting six shots off and finding the back of the cage once to own a 1-0 advantage through the first 15 minutes. Hayden and the backline surrendered the first goal in the opening three minutes but responded with stifling defense in the remaining of the quarter.

The Heels added two more goals in the middle of the second frame. The Quaker offense saw some life in the closing two minutes before the break, firing off three shots on two penalty corner attempts. Two of the shots were on target, but both were turned away by the UNC keeper.

A penalty corner early in the restart saw the Tar Heels add their final goal of the game. Penn didn't back down, earning a corner of its own minutes later. Courtney Kenah inserted to the left side of the arc where Banks fired off a wide shot then was followed by Loozen with a blocked attempt.

Down the stretch, Hayden held strong back in the cage, making five more saves in the final two quarters to keep the Heels off the scoreboard. However, nothing produced on the other end of the field for Penn, as the score held at 4-0.

Up Next
The Quakers fly back to Philly for a three-game homestand, opening with Boston College on Friday at 3 p.m., at Ellen Vagelos Field.
