Men's Soccer Mashes Mount St. Mary's 5-0

EMMITSBURG, MD. – For the second time in 364 days, the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team put five goals on the board against Mount St. Mary's University, running away with a 5-0 victory at Waldron Family Stadium Friday night.

Quaker Notemeal
* Penn knocked off The Mount 5-1 last September 17 at Rhodes Field, setting the high mark for goals in a match under head coach Brian Gill. As they also did on Friday night, Michael Hewes, Ben Stitz and Stas Korzeniowski all scored in the match last September.

* Hewes finished the game with his first brace as a Quaker.

* Nick Christoffersen had a light night in goal, stopping both of Mount St. Mary's on-target attempts, both in the second half, for his first clean sheet of the season.

* One week after taking 21 shots against Albany, a single-match high under Gill, the Quakers reset that mark with 23 shots on Friday night.

How It Happened
Penn forced three saves from Mount goalkeeper Ethan Russell in the opening 10 minutes, continuing an aggressive attack that has been a fixture for the Quakers throughout the first five matches. Penn finished the opening half with four on-target attempts and 10 shots total, holding the Mountaineers without a single shot in the process, but were unable to convert as the match remained scoreless.

Finally, in the 53rd minute, Hewes took a pass from Jack Rosener, dribbled into the 18-yard-box, and blasted a left-footed strike past the keeper to break the deadlock.

The Mount went two-thirds of the match minutes without a single shot before getting a point-blank range opportunity in the 60th minute, but Christoffersen turned it away to keep Penn in front.

Leo Burney doubled the lead three minutes later, putting home the rebound of his own saved shot for his second goal of the season.

In the 68th, a touch pass from Stitz off an initial feed in from Korzeniowski set up Hewes for his second and a three-goal advantage for the Red and Blue.

The Quakers blew the doors off with a Stitz goal in the 71st and a Korzeniowski score 45 seconds later.
