Handley Named USILA's Outstanding Midfielder; Six Earn USILA All-America

PHILADELPHIA – The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) has announced its 2022 All-America teams, and the University of Pennsylvania was well-represented with Sam Handley receiving first-team honors, Piper Bond gaining a third-team award, and Patrick Burkinshaw, BJ Farrare, Dylan Gergar and Brendan Lavelle earning honorable mention recognition.

In addition, Handley made history as he became just the second Penn player to earn the Donald MacLaughlin Jr. Award as the nation's outstanding midfielder. The first was Michael Page in 1977.

Sam Handley led Penn with 73 points this season, scoring 36 goals and dishing out a team-high 37 assists. His 73 points are second on Penn's single-season list, behind only Peter Hollis (75 in 1977), while his 37 assists are third and his 36 goals are tied for seventh. Handley was tops among Ivy League players in assists per game (3.00) and points per game (5.83) in conference play and recorded at least three points in all but one game this season. The highlight came in Penn's 21-20 overtime loss at Princeton, when he fell one assist shy of the program's single-game record set in 1969 and scored three goals for an 11-point day. The Inside Lacrosse National Freshman of the Year and unanimous Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2019, Handley is one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award and was recently honored with the University's prestigious Class of 1915 Award.

Penn's other first-team All-Ivy selection by the Ancient Eight coaches, Bond earned third-team honors from the USILA as a short-stick defensive middie. One of this year's captains, Bond had 11 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls. At the offensive end, the senior scored two goals and dished off two assists for four points, three of them coming in Ivy play.

Burkinshaw gained honorable mention recognition from the USILA after a stellar season between the pipes for the Quakers. That was especially true in the Quakers' four postseason games, where he had a .625 save percentage (65 saves, 39 goals allowed). The senior was named Most Outstanding Player at the Ivy League Tournament after he set ILT records for saves in a game (20 in Penn's semifinal win over Brown) and saves in a tournament (36). Overall, he ranks fourth nationally in saves per game (13.93), ninth in save percentage (.556), and 22nd in goals-against average (10.81). Burkinshaw was an honorable mention All-Ivy pick.

Also a two-time honorable mention All-Ivy pick, Farrare was a menace on the wing during faceoffs and scooped up 55 ground balls. He also had a team-high 19 caused turnovers this season and recorded two goals (against Duke and Brown) and six assists with the long pole. Of note, he caused five turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls in Penn's Ivy League Tournament semifinal win over top-seeded and host Brown. Following the Tournament, Farrare was named to the all-tournament team.

Gergar received honorable mention recognition from the USILA after leading Penn with 52 goals, which is second on the program's single-season list behind his former teammate Adam Goldner (56 in 2019). He also dished out 17 assists for 69 points, third on Penn's single-season list in that category. Gergar scored at least five points in eight games this season—including the Quakers' NCAA quarterfinal loss to Rutgers—and was held to one goal just once. Gergar is eighth on Penn's all-time list with 95 goals.

Lavelle was the other Penn player with honorable mention recognition. The sophomore has typically been assigned the opponents' top offensive player this season. The second-team All-Ivy pick had 11 caused turnovers and 24 ground balls.

Penn finished the season with an 11-5 record, winning the Ivy League Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Championship quarterfinal round for the second straight time before falling to Rutgers last Saturday at Hofstra.
