Men's Lacrosse Closes Ivy Campaign Saturday at Dartmouth

PHILADELPHIA – The 12th-ranked University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team will conclude the Ivy League portion of its 2022 season this weekend, making the long trip North to Dartmouth. The Quakers need a win to stay alive for an Ivy League Tournament bid in what has been one of the craziest Ancient Eight campaigns anyone can remember.

The Penn-Dartmouth Series
*Saturday's game will mark the 72nd meeting between the Quakers and the Big Green, with Penn owning a 44-27 lead in the series.

*Penn has won seven in a row over the Big Green with three of those coming in Hanover. The last meeting came in 2019, the Quakers clinching an undefeated Ivy campaign with a 22-6 victory.

*That said, the last time the Quakers traveled to Hanover they barely escaped, winning 10-9 in overtime in 2018. Penn's last two losses to Dartmouth also came in the Granite State, in 2010 and 2012.

Handley Named a Tewaaraton Award Nominee
The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced its 25 men's lacrosse nominees for the 2022 Tewaaraton Award on Thursday, and the list included University of Pennsylvania senior midfielder Sam Handley. He is one of four Ivy Leaguers on the list.

Penn Men's Lacrosse by the Numbers
2 * Penn players who were named Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-America: senior middie Sam Handley (first-team All-America) and sophomore defenseman Brendan Lavelle (third-team All-America).

3 * Overtime games already this season for Penn: a 14-13 win over Duke on February 26; a 21-20 loss at Princeton on March 19 to open Ivy League play; and a 12-11 loss at Yale on April 2.

3 * Goals scored by Penn in the final seconds of games already this season. Shipley tied the Duke game with two seconds left, then a week later won the Penn State game with one second left. A week after that, Dylan Gergar scored at Villanova with one second left to give the Quakers an 8-7 win over the Wildcats. (For good measure, Gergar scored with just one second on the clock to end the first quarter two weeks ago against Brown.)

3.20 * Assists per game dished out by Handley in five Ivy League contests, tops among Ivy players.

3 * Penn players who have earned spots on the USILA Division I Team of the Week already this season: Gergar on March 1, Lavelle on March 15, Handley on March 22, and face-off specialist Jamie Zusi on Monday.

4 * Penn's national Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) as of Monday. As a sign of how strong the Ivy League is this year, five of this week's top nine RPIs are held by Ancient Eight teams (Princeton 2, Yale 6, Cornell 8, Brown 9).

5 * Games this season in which Gergar has at least three goals; that includes each of Penn's last two games, as he netted hat tricks against both Brown and Harvard.

6 * Ivy League teams in this week's USILA Top 20: Princeton (3), Cornell (8), Yale (10), Penn (12), Brown (14) and Harvard (17).

6.00 * Points per game recorded by Handley in five Ivy League contests, tops among Ivy players.

8 * Assists by Handley against Princeton on March 19, one shy of the single-game program record held since 1969 by Richard Bennett (set against Drexel).

9.00 * Penn's assists-per-game average in Ivy League play, tops among the Ancient Eight programs; the Quakers have 45 assists in 67 goals in Ivy play, a 67.2-percent ratio.

12 * Penn's ranking in this week's USILA national coaches' poll.

13 * Penn's ranking in this week's Inside Lacrosse media poll.

14.12 * Average saves per game by senior goalie Patrick Burkinshaw this season, tops among Ivy goalies and fifth nationally.

15.00 * Average saves per game by Burkinshaw in Ivy play, tops among Ivy goalies (as is his .560 save percentage in league games).

15 * Players who have scored this season for Penn, led by Gergar who has 27 tallies. Handley has 21, Rubin has 18, and Shipley has 11. (Peter Blake became the Quakers' 15th scorer this season when he converted a 70-yard shot to break Harvard's 10-man ride last weekend.)

20 * Saves made last Saturday by Burkinshaw against Harvard, a career high. He had a staggering .714 save percentage in the contest and was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on Monday.

37 * Saves by Burkinshaw over Penn's last two games; in that span he has a .649 save percentage.
