ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team improved on an impressive day one showing at the 118th EIWA Championship as it saw nine student-athletes punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships in Detroit later this month. With 143 points, the Red and Blue finished as the runner-up in the team standings behind the host Cornell Big The two-day conference championships took place at Newman Arena at Bartels Hall on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
The team finish was Penn's best at the Championships since a second-place finish in 2010. The nine wrestlers advancing out of the conference championship is the most in the program's history. At the end of the meet, Head Coach
Roger Reina was named EIWA Coach of the Year by a vote of his colleagues. Reina was previously voted EIWA Coach of the Year in 1996, 1997, and 1999.
Michael Colaiocco took home the EIWA title at 133 pounds with an 8-4 decision over Navy's Josh Koderhandt. This was Penn's first individual title since
Anthony Artalona won the title at 149 in 2019, and Colaiocco was the first Penn wrestler to win at 133 pounds since Bryan Ortenzio a decade ago in 2012.
Colaiocco was the first Quaker to earn his spot in Detroit as he secured a place in the title bout with an 8-0 victory over Army's Richard Treanor.
CJ Composto earned his spot as he defeated Binghamton's Ryan Anderson.
Anthony Artalona kept the going as he secured his spot at NCAAs with a victory over Max Brignola of Lehigh.
Doug Zapf,
Lucas Revano and
Cole Urbas all battled back to earn their qualifying spots.
Ryan Miller,
Nick Incontrera, and
Ben Goldin made sure they weren't left out of the trip to Detroit as they too made their way to the NCAAs.
