Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team split a doubleheader with Wofford on Saturday, taking the opener 5-2 before dropping the nightcap, in walk-off fashion, 6-5.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
*Jackson Appel had three hits and two RBI in the opener, tying his career-highs in both set in last year's season finale 16-3 win over La Salle.

*Ben Miller set a new career high with three RBI in the nightcap. His previous mark of two was set in the same season finale win over La Salle in 2021.

*Brendan Bean picked up his first save of the season in the opener with a scoreless seventh inning. He's not allowed an earned run in his last 10 appearances, totaling 15 innings, dating back to the 2020 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 1
Wofford jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second, but Penn answered quickly in the third. Seth Werchan led off with a single, then Tommy Courtney reached on a throwing error. After a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet, Appel reached on an infield single, with both Werchan and Courtney scoring on a throwing error by the Terriers' shortstop. After Wyatt Henesler was hit by a pitch, Andrew Hernandez singled to left, plating Appel.

A Wofford sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third halved the Quakers' lead, but Courtney and Appel helped Penn get the run back in the top of the fifth. Courtney led off the inning with a single, then scored on Appel's double down the left field line.

Penn starter Joe Miller was pulled after 5.1 strong innings, fanning out three of the final four batters he faced, finishing his day with six strikeouts.

With Penn still up 4-2 in the top of the seventh, Henesler doubled home Appel after the junior reached on Wofford's fourth error of the game. Bean closed out the win, getting three fly outs in the bottom half of the inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 2
As was the case in Game 1, Wofford struck first and Penn quickly answered back.

After the Terriers scored in the bottom of the first, Hernandez reached on an infield single, then Cole Palis followed, reaching on an error that sent Hernandez to third. Hernandez scored two pitches later on a sacrifice fly from Miller.

After a scoreless second inning from Penn starter Noah Millikan, making his Quaker debut, Penn shot in front with four in the third. With Courtney on second and Appel on first with one out, Henseler drove in Courtney with a single to left. After a fly out sent Hernandez to third, Cole Palis plated him with another single to left. Miller followed with a double to right-center, scoring both Palis and Henesler.

Wofford cut the margin to 5-3 in the bottom of the third, knocking Millikan out of the game. The Terriers added one in the fourth, and another in the fifth to knot the game at five. The Terriers seemed poised to take the lead in the fifth after putting runners on second and third with one out, but Danny Heintz got out of trouble with a strikeout and fly out.

After both teams went down quietly in the sixth, Seth Werchan singled, then advanced to third on a pair of groundouts in the Penn seventh, but he'd be stranded there, leaving the game tied heading to the bottom of the seventh.

A walk, a wild pitch, and an infield single set the stage for a walk-off sacrifice fly as Penn settled for a split of the doubleheader.
