Softball Drops Doubleheader to Lehigh

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball hosted Lehigh for a doubleheader at Penn Park on Wednesday. The Quakers dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Mountain Lions. Penn staged a late rally in game one but fell 9-6 and then it was all Lehigh in game two as the Mountain Lions won 15-1.

GAME 1: Lehigh 9, Penn 6
Lehigh took a 3-0 lead on a second inning sacrifice fly and two-run homer in the third.

Sarah Schneider was hit by a pitch leading off the Penn third and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brianna Brown then singled Schneider home and advanced to second on the play, later advancing to third on another wild pitch. After Emma Nedley reached on an infield single, Dana Anderson drove in Schneider with a groundout to short, with Nedley taking second on the play. Following the third wild pitch of the inning that sent Nedley to third, Bella Fiorentino drove her in with another infield single, tying the game at three.

That tie would not last long, however, as Lehigh put four on the board in the fourth, one in the fifth, and another in the sixth while Penn failed to get a runner past second base between the fourth and sixth innings.

In the Penn seventh, Schneider led off with a double and advanced to third on a Brown single before Nedley walked to load the bases with no one out. After Anderson knocked in Schneider and moved Brown to third with a sacrifice fly, with two out and the bases loaded, Laurel McKelvey reached on an infield single that scored Brown, bringing the tying run to the plate.

Julia Schneider then walked, forcing home Nedley and bringing the potential winning run to the plate, but a strikeout ended the Quaker rally and the game.

GAME 2: Lehigh 15, Penn 1
Game two was all Lehigh. The visitors quickly took control of the game and the scoreboard as they dropped four runs in the top of the first. They forced a few Penn pitching changes in the top of the second as they batted around and put up nine runs in the inning. After the top of the second Lehigh led 13-0.

Penn pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the second. Dana Anderson opened the bottom of the second inning with a double to right center and then Madi Bauerle came in to pinch run for her. Bauerle scored on a sac fly off the bat of McKelvey. This would be the only run Penn got in the game.

Lehigh added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 15-1 final.
