Palis Plates Seven as Baseball Splits Ivy League-Opening Doubleheader With Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team split its Ivy League-opening doubleheader against Columbia on Saturday, taking the opener 10-5 before falling 11-10 in walk-off fashion in the second game, ending its eight-game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
For the second straight game, Cole Palis set a career-high in RBI, while Craig Larsen and Jackson Appel each finished with three hits and a pair of runs scored. Kevin Eaise struck out eight over six innings, scattering five hits.

In the second inning, Larsen drove in Ben Miller with a line-drive single to center and Palis plated three with a line-drive double the other way, putting Penn up 4-0. The Quakers tacked on another run via a fielder's choice in the third.

Eaise didn't allow a runner past second base until the sixth, when he finally conceded his only two runs allowed on the day. Penn got three runs right back in the seventh, two coming home on a two-out fielding error.

Jackson Appel launched the first pitch of the eighth inning well beyond the center field wall for his first collegiate home run and Tommy Courtney drove in Palis in the ninth for the final run of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
Courtney tied his career-high with four hits, Palis added another three RBI, Wyatt Henseler finished with two hits and two RBI, and Miller finished with two hits and two runs scored.

On the mound, Joe Miller finished with career-highs of 7.2 innings and 10 strikeouts.

RBI singles by Seth Werchan and Courtney put two on the board for Penn in the second. Three run-scoring outs across the third and fourth innings put Penn up 5-2, and a Courtney RBI single and Hensele two-run double in the fifth made it 8-2.

After the Lions trimmed the margin to 8-4, Palis launched a frozen rope over the wall in right-center in the sixth, putting Penn up 10-4.

Columbia closed to 10-9 with one run in the seventh and four in the eighth. In the ninth, back-to-back homers to open the frame gave the Lions the walk-off win.
