Baseball Falls 11-10 in Wild Opener at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team dropped the opener of its weekend series with Winthrop, 11-10, Friday night on a walk-off home run. 17 of the game's 21 runs were scored over the final 3+ innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second time in a week, a Ben Miller first-inning home run put the Quakers up 2-0; Jackson Appel, who had reached on a one-out single, scored on the four-bagger.

Kevin Eaise was in command early on for Penn (5-5), allowing just two hits through the first four innings. Wyatt Henesler provided Eaise with some extra run support in the top of the fifth with a two-run homer to dead center.

Winthrop (4-9) put the first two men on in the fifth and loaded the bases with two out, but Eaise ended the threat without allowing a single run. The Eagles broke through in the sixth, knocking Eaise out of the game after putting the first four men on, eventually coming all the way back to tie the game heading into the seventh.

That tie did not last long as a single by Appel, a walk to Henesler, and an error on a ball off the bat of Miller loaded the bases for Penn in the seventh.

With one out, Hernandez unloaded the bases with a grand slam to left field, giving the Quakers another four-run cushion. Henseler provided some additional cushion in the eighth with a two-run single.

The Terriers cut the deficit to 10-9 with a five-run eighth, then won it on Dillon Morton's two-run walk-off in the ninth.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
*Penn finished with 10 runs, a season-high, and 13 hits, one off its season-high. Following a 14-hit performance Wednesday night, the Quakers notched at least 10 hits in consecutive games for the first time this season.

*With four steals in the game, Penn equaled its season total coming in.

*Penn's three home runs were one off its season total entering the game.

*Hernandez's grand slam was the first for the program since Larsen launched one against Dartmouth on April 6, 2019.
