Baseball Knocks Off Texas A&M, 2-1, In 2022 Opener Behind Dominant Coady, Timely Hitting

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Owen Coady struck out eight batters in 4.2 innings of relief, including four over the eighth and ninth innings, as the University of Pennsylvania baseball team opened its 2022 season with a Texas-sized victory, knocking off the Texas A&M Aggies 2-1 from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park Friday afternoon.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
*The win was Penn's first over a Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent since a 2-1 win over Georgia in 1923.

*The Quakers have now won two of their last three season openers after winning just one from 2010-2019.

*Penn's 1-7 hitters all finished with at least one hit, including senior Tommy Courtney, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games dating back to last season.

*Kevin Eaise got the start and struck out four in 4.1 innings of work; he's struck out at least four in six of his last seven starts dating back to 2020.

*Coady's outing was the longest of his Penn career. He went 4.0 innings once in 2020 and 4.1 innings once last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After each team left runners in scoring position in each of the first four half-innings, Penn (1-0) broke through in the top of the third. With two out and nobody on, Craig Larsen reached on an error and Wyatt Henseler made the Aggies pay on the very next pitch, ripping a double down the left field line that plated Larsen.

After leaving five men on base over the first three innings, the Aggies knotted the score in the fourth, but catcher Jackson Appel made sure that was all as he cut down an attempted base stealer to end the inning.

The bottom of the fifth was a defensive showcase for Penn both in the outfield and infield. First, with one on and no one out, Courtney made a running, sprawling catch in right-center, robbing the Aggies of a run-scoring extra-base hit.

Then, with runners on the corners and one out, Coady, after coming in to relieve Eaise, induced a double play to escape the threat. The game would remain tied until the top of the eighth.

After Appel singled to left to lead off the inning, with one out, the Aggies chose to intentionally walk Henseler. Next up stepped Palis, who had turned the double play to get the Quakers out of the fifth. On a 1-1 pitch, Palis lofted a fly ball to right that was just out of the reach of the Aggies' right fielder, allowing Appel to score from second.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Aggies put runners on second and third with one out, but Coady escaped the jam with back-to-back swinging strikeouts.

In the bottom of the ninth, Coady set the Aggies down in order to close out the win, adding two more strikeouts for a career-high eight.
