About VISIT PHILADELPHIA®  Manifesto

Philadelphia surprises people.

It reveals its multifaceted, captivating personality to them block by block, mural by mural, garden by garden, neighborhood by neighborhood.

Here, 100-year-old cheese shops happily live a few doors down from lauded chef-run restaurants. There's so much art; it's inside, outside and on the sides of buildings. The corner bar thrives, and just about everyone is a craft beer enthusiast. Clothing design, building design and park design inspire. Creativity bursts from art galleries, modern dance troupes, street performances, story slams, concerts and DJ parties.

Philadelphians count on festivals for any and all reasons, bike trails for fun and bike lanes for transport and people just being themselves.

We believe in the power of travel; it shapes a person and expands horizons. Philadelphia delivers on our promise of an urban, main street, foodie, historic, cultural, cool, eye-opening, independent experience. It's one destination, five counties, countless things to do.

Philadelphia is our job and our passion. Some may call us Philly freaks, and we're OK with/proud of that.

We want people to get to know Philadelphia. Smile at our ads; click around our websites; watch our videos; follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the rest.

But mostly, we want people to visit Philadelphia.

The Palestra
Penn Wrestling matches are held at the historic Palestra, the most storied gymnasium in the history of collegiate athletics in America. The Palestra is also home to men's and women's basketball, as well as women's gymnastics and volleyball.

Located on the University of Pennsylvania campus, The Palestra was given its name by Greek professor Dr. William N. Bates, who felt the name logical because in ancient Greece, young men would compete in a variety of events in a rectangular enclosure attached to the gymnasium to the view of all who would come - a Palestra.

The Name was widely accepted by the organizing committee for it fit the specifications: authenticity, dignity, descriptive, and novel. So. in 1927, "The Palestra" was opened.

The Palestra, which means "house of wrestling" in Greek, has hosted numerous wrestling events including the NWCA All-Star meet, several Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships, and the 1992 Olympic Trials.
