Squash Splits Pair of Top-10 Matches with Drexel; Men Retain Pennsylvania State Championship

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's squash teams split their Pennsylvania State Championship matches with Drexel Sunday afternoon from the Specter Squash Center, with the Quaker men beating the Dragons 7-2 and the Dragon women knocking off the Quakers by an identical 7-2 score.

On the women's side, the #9-ranked Quakers got four-game wins from Grace Lavin and Navmi Sharma against the #3-ranked Dragons, Lavin picking up her second victory of the young season. Jana Dweek rallied from 0-1 and 1-2 deficits to force a fifth game in her match before falling in 53 minutes, the longest match of the day on the women's side. Natasha Penseler, Eujung Park and Penelope Oh all fell in four games.

For the men, #7 Drexel took the lead after the first wave, with Rehan Luthra picking up a 3-0 win to keep the second-ranked Quakers within one at 2-1. Mere seconds after Drexel took the 2-1 lead, Nathan Kueh closed out a 3-0 win to level things at two, the first of six straight Quaker victories to end the match. Dana Santry and Dillon Huang followed with 3-0 wins in succession to put Penn up 4-2. Shaam Gambhir needed a few extra points in the final game, but closed his match 3-0, capping the win for the Quakers. Omar Hafez picked up his second win of the weekend in three games and, after trailing 0-2, Nick Spizzirri rallied for a five-game win in a marathon match that lasted 73 minutes. The victory makes five straight Pennsylvania State Championships for Penn.

Both teams will play three matches next weekend, beginning Friday and Saturday in Virginia before returning to the Penn Squash Center Sunday for their first home matches of the season.
