How It Happened
The first set was a see-saw affair, the teams tying 14 times and the biggest lead three points (Cornell 14-11) to 18-18. A McGregor kill set Penn off on a four-point run to turn a 19-18 deficit into a 22-19 lead, but the Big Red scored four of the next five points to get things back level at 23-23, then got set point on a Camryn Carlo kill. A Green kill sent it to 24-24, and after another Cornell point a Leak kill made it 25-25. However, a Sydney Moore kill and a Joanna Chang block gave the Big Red the set, 27-25.
The second set wasn't nearly as close. Cornell scored the first three and eight of the first nine points and never looked back. The margin was double digits by 14-4 and the Quakers got it within single digits just once, at 15-6, at which point the Big Red scored four in a row on the way to the 25-7 victory.
It looked like Cornell would get the sweep, the Big Red scoring six of the first seven points in the third set. It was still 11-5 when Penn went on a five-point run to get within one. Cornell scored four of the next five points to go back in front by four. The Big Red's lead was still three when a
Madison Risch kill set the Quakers off on a five-point run that put them in front 20-18. Cornell got back level at 21-21, and the teams tied at 22 and 23 before Cornell got set point. Penn fought that off, and it turned out to be the start of a three-point run that gave the Quakers the 26-24 win.
The fourth set was tied 7-7 when Cornell used a three-point run to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The teams traded points through several sideouts, but at 13-10 the Big Red reeled off eight of the next nine points to take control of the set and the match. It was 21-11 at that point and the best Penn could do was trade points the rest of the way.
