Wrestling Announces 2022-23 Captains

PHILADELPHIA – Carmen Ferrante, Ben Goldin, and Doug Zapf will continue to lead Penn Wresting as they will serve as captains for the 2022-23 season as announced by head coach Roger Reina.

All three have proven themselves as leaders on and off the mat for #TheMovement during their careers, and are ready again as the team prepares for a new season.

"These three provided strong leadership for their team last season," said Reina. "Yet we are confident they will deliver next-level performances on and off the mats as we continue our climb in what promises to be an incredibly exciting NCAA season."

Ferrante, now a 3X Captain and past NCAA Qualifer, went 4-0 at the 2021 Keystone Classic taking first place at 141 pounds. He went on to place at the prestigious Midlands Championships as well.  Battling for his starting spot vs eventual NCAA All American CJ Composto, Carmen lost two razor thin wrestle-offs yet continued to deliver exceptional leadership in Penn's climb up the national ladder last season. Ferrante made his way back to the lineup in a clutch win against #19 Princeton as he moved up a weight class and earned a takedown in sudden victory sparking the dual win for Penn.

"Every day I am grateful for the opportunity to help lead Penn Wrestling," said Ferrante. "It is an honor and a privilege to represent the history of this program and the impressive group of guys we have here. I love this team, and I look forward to chasing down the vision we have set for ourselves this upcoming year."

Goldin posted a 19-7 overall record and went 7-2 in dual meet action in 2021-22. He also went 6-2 against EIWA competition and 4-1 against Ivy opponents. Goldin posted the fasted fall time on the season at 0:38. In 2022, he qualified for his first NCAA Championships earning a victory over UVA's Quinn Miller (SV-1, 7-5). The Florida native placed fourth at the 2022 EIWA Championships going 3-2 with wins over Columbia's Daniel Conley (5-0), Binghamton's Joe Doyle (3-1), and Princeton's Matt Cover (4-0). His seven dual meet wins came against #2 Penn State, Columbia, Brown, Harvard, LIU, #19 Princeton and Drexel. Overall, he posted a team-leading six falls. Consistently ranked nationally throughout the season, he closed out the regular season ranked in three polls: Wrestlestat (#27), Intermat (#28), and the NCAA Coaches' Panel (#30).

"I am grateful to be named one of the captains of the Penn Wrestling team," said Goldin. "As a leader I want to create an environment where every member shares in the team's success regardless of their position in the lineup. Our room has grown extremely competitive, and I am excited to watch us exceed our goals."

Zapf's 2021-22 season included early season finals appearances in both the Keystone Classic and The Midlands. He went 19-8 overall and was 7-2 in dual meets. He posted a 6-1 record against EIWA competition and went 3-1 in Ivy duals. Over the course of the season earned wins against #2 Penn State, Columbia, Harvard, #11 Cornell, LIU, Drexel, and American. In his season debut, he earned a huge victory over Lehigh's returning All-American, Josh Humphreys (9-8), at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic. Zapf placed for the 3rd consecutive year at the EIWA Championships and earned his 2nd NCAA berth in the process.  Like Goldin, Zapf earned national recognition throughout the season as he closed out the regular season ranked in four polls: Intermat (#19), Wrestlestat (#19), FloWrestling (#21), and the NCAA Coaches' Panel (#23).  Post season, Zapf broke out on the freestyle scene with an impressive 3rd place finish at 70kg in the US Open, posting wins over NCAA finalist Sammy Sasso of Ohio State and former NCAA Champ Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers.

"Being a captain for the Penn Wrestling team is an honor," said Zapf. "The Penn Wrestling community is extremely special, and I hope to be a strong example for my teammates. I hope to lead the team this year to heights never reached before!"
