Men's Basketball Can't Catch Princeton, Falls 74-64

PRINCETON, N.J. – Playing its first Ivy League road game of the season—albeit in front of a small crowd at cavernous Jadwin Gym—the University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team fell to Princeton, 74-64.

The Quakers are now 6-12 overall and 3-2 in Ivy League play, while the Tigers remain unbeaten in Ivy play (4-0) and are 14-3 overall.

*Freshman George Smith nearly had his first collegiate double-double, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds and scoring nine points. The 10 boards were a season/career high.

How It Happened
Penn got off to a good start on Monday afternoon, jumping out to a 14-9 lead that extended to 17-11 when Smith drained a three-pointer off a Martz feed. The Tigers showed their claws at that point, however, holding the Quakers scoreless for more than three minutes and running off 11 straight points for a 22-17 lead.

Slajchert ended the skid with a floater in the lane, and after another drought of 2:13 he scored again to make it a 22-21 game. Princeton traded a pair of threes for two Penn buckets to extend the lead to three, then scored on consecutive possessions to open it back up to 32-25. It was 34-28 Tigers at the break.

Penn could never get all the way back. The Quakers fought, whittling away at Princeton's 12-point lead from early in the period with a 9-2 run that ended with Slajchert slicing through the lane for another bucket. The teams then traded baskets for a few possessions before both hit droughts with the score 51-47. No points were scored by either team for 3:35 of game action before Martz ended the skid with a bucket in the lane to get Penn within two points.

Afterward, all that you could see were missed opportunities. In all, Penn held Princeton scoreless for 5:31 of game action but only scored six points itself in that span. When Evbuomwan finally got the Tigers back on the board with a foul shot, it started the hosts on a methodical 6-0 run over a 1:50 span and gave them a 57-49 lead with less than seven minutes to play as Penn went scoreless for nearly four minutes.

The Quakers couldn't recover from there. The Princeton lead hit double digits four times in the final 3:21 and the closest Penn could get was six, at 70-64.
