PHILADELPHIA – Joseph W. Blood Head Coach of Baseball
John Yurkow has announced the hiring of
Christian Scafidi C'20. Scafidi will join the Red and Blue as the team's Pitching Development Coordinator.
"We are excited about the addition of
Christian Scafidi to our staff," said Yurkow. "He brings a winning attitude and wealth of experience to our program. It's great to bring one of our most accomplished pitchers back to Penn. Christian will be a great resource for our players."
Scafidi was a workhorse on the mound for four seasons in University City. In his career, he went 11-6 with three complete games and 141 strikeouts in 158 and a third innings of work for the Quakers. He was the 2019 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous first team All-Ivy selection as a junior. He was twice honored as the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week, include once as a senior during the shortened 2020 campaign.
"I could not be more grateful and excited to have this opportunity to come back home to Penn," said Scafidi. "When my senior season was cancelled due to COVID, I left with a heavy heart and some unfinished business. I want to thank Coach Yurkow, Coach Schwartz, Coach Santello and Coach Brooks for bringing me on to the staff and allowing me to pick up where we left off in 2020."
In his final year at Penn, Scafidi went 2-0 with an unblemished 0.00 ERA in 15 innings pitched. He fanned 15 batters in 2020 before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before graduating, he garnered Academic All-Ivy honors thanks to his work in the classroom.
Scafidi went to the Notre Dame as a graduate transfer for the 2021 season. He made two starts and a went 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA before suffering a season-ending injury.
He graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at Penn in 2020 and earned his master's degree in Management from Notre Dame's Mendoza School of Business in 2021.
"Getting to coach some of my teammates as well as continue to learn and develop as a person and a player is a dream job for me here at Penn," said Scafidi. "I know there are amazing things ahead for this program and I can't wait to get back on campus and get to work."
