OLYMPIAN: Dara Alizadeh C’15, Rowing, Bermuda (Single Sculls)

Dara Alizadeh will row single sculls for Bermuda in Tokyo.
PHILADELPHIA – Add another Olympian to the University of Pennsylvania ledger for the Games that are underway in Tokyo.

Dara Alizadeh C'15 will make his Olympics debut in Tokyo, representing Bermuda and rowing in the single sculls competition. He joins fellow alum Regina Salmons at the rowing venue, while alums Shaul Gordon (men's fencing) and Sam Mattis (men's track & field) as well as rising senior Keanan Dols (men's swimming) are also scheduled to compete at the 2021 Games.

Alizadeh earned his spot back in March at the Americas rowing qualifier in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, taking third in the B final to clinch one of five qualifying spots in the single sculls discipline. Alizadeh is just the third rower to represent the tiny island of Bermuda at the Olympics, after Jim Butterfield (Munich 1972) and Shelley Pearson (Rio 2016). In addition, Alizadeh is scheduled to carry the Bermuda flag during the Opening Ceremonies.

Alizadeh was a member of Penn's heavyweight Varsity Eight boat as an undergrad and following his senior year he won a silver medal as a member of the United States' Men's Eight at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. He also boasts a pair of Boat Race wins with Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, from 2018 and 2019, and has extensive international experience as Bermuda's single sculler.

The Olympic Games will take place from July 21-August 8, with rowing scheduled to run from July 23-30.
