Baseball Takes Both Ends of a Doubleheader With La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader versus visiting La Salle on Saturday at Meiklejohn Stadium. The Quakers (2-5) won the opener 15-7 before taking the nightcap, 5-4.

Freshman Wyatt Henseler had a big day for the Red and Blue as he went 6-for-8 with five RBI and three runs scored.

On the mound, Brian Zeldin earned the victory out of the bullpen in game one and Kevin Eaise tossed five scoreless innings on the bump to pick up the win in game two.

NOTES
*Penn had 13 hits and all nine starters reached base safely at least twice in game one.

*Leadoff batter Tommy Courtney went 2-for-4 in game one with a homerun, three RBI and two runs scored. He also added a hit and a run scored in game two.

*Catcher Andrew Hernandez was 2-for-5 with three RBI in the opener.

*Cole Palis walked three times and scored four runs in game one.

*Hensler was 4-for-4 in the opener with four RBI. He was 2-for-4 in the finale.

*Eduardo Malinowski had a solo homer in game two. It was his second homerun of the spring.

*Seth Werchan had one RBI in both games.

GAME 1
La Salle started fast, plating two runs in the first before adding five more in the second frame. The Quakers got on the board in the home half of the second as Cole Henseler scored on a wild pitch before Tommy Courtney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

After a scoreless top of the third, Penn erupted for seven runs on six hits to take a two-run lead at 9-7.

During the stanza, Henseler hit a three-run double, Seth Werchan recorded an RBI triple, Tommy Courtney hit a two-run homer to right and Andrew Hernandez added an RBI single.

Brian Zeldin came out of the bullpen and kept La Salle off the board for the remainder of the seven-inning contest as Penn would not relinquish the lead. Zeldin pitched five scoreless innings of relief. He struck out three hitters and scattered four hits.

Penn would tack on two insurance runs in the fourth before adding four more in the sixth.

GAME 2
The Penn offense picked up where they left off as the Quakers scored four runs on five hits in the first inning. During the frame, Eduardo Malinowski scored on a wild pitch before Henseler ripped an RBI single down the left-field line. The Quaker would add two more runs thanks to a Craig Larsen sac fly and a walk from Seth Werchan with the bases loaded.

After a 1-2-3 top of the second, Penn added another run courtesy of a leadoff homerun to left field from Eduardo Malinowski.

Penn starter Kevin Eaise tossed five scoreless innings to earn his first win of the year. He struck out seven Explorers and surrendered just one hit. After a scoreless inning from Brendan Bean, Owen Coady came on to get the final nine outs for the Quakers. Coady earned the save as he struck out five batters.
