Baseball Splits A Doubleheader With Delaware

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Delaware on Saturday at Meiklejohn Stadium. The Quakers (3-6) won the finale, 9-1, after dropping the opener, 4-0, to the Blue Hens (5-9).

Penn got a pair of strong starting pitching performances Joe Miller and Kevin Eaise. Eaise went seven innings and recorded eight strikeouts in game two to earn his second win of the year.

Tommy Courtney had a big day at the plate for the Quakers from the leadoff spot. He went 4-for-9 on the day with two steals and two runs scored.

NOTES
*Penn had 12 hits in game two. It was their third game this spring with 10 or more hits.

*Tommy Courtney, Jackson Appel, Craig Larsen and Seth Werchan all had two hits apiece in the finale.

*Tommy Courtney stole a base in both games. He is now 5-of-5 on stolen base attempts this year.

*Catcher Andrew Hernandez threw out two runners attempting to steal in game one. In game two, Jackson Appel gunned down one runner trying to swipe second. Delaware was 0-for-3 in stolen base attempts on the day.

*Brendan Bean tossed a scoreless inning of relief in game two. He struck out one hitter and got out of a two-on, one-out jam with an inning-ending double play.

*Freshman Danny Heintz worked a scoreless inning on the mound in game two as well. He struck out two batters in the frame. On the season, he has fanned eight batter in four and a third innings.

GAME 1
Quaker southpaw Joe Miller had his strongest start of the season for the Red and Blue in the opener. He was the tough-luck loser as he tossed seven innings and allowed just one earned run. He fanned six Blue Hens and scattered six hits.

Delaware opened the scoring in the first inning. It was the only earned run the Blue Hens would score on the day. The guests added to their lead with a run in the third frame thanks to taking advantage of a Penn error.

Penn threatened with runners on the corners in the fourth, but were unable to push a run across.

The Blue Hens capped the scoring in the game with a pair of runs in the eighth.

Both Tommy Courtney and Andrew Hernandez had two hits apiece for the Quakers. Wyatt Henseler and Eduardo Malinowski both added hits for the hosts as well in game one.

Chris Ludman went the distance for the guests, allowing six hits as he registered a complete-game shutout.

GAME 2
The Penn offense erupted for four runs on three hits in the home half of the first to start strong. In the inning, Courtney and Malinowski used aggressive baserunning to score on a wild pitch and an error by the Delaware catcher. The Quakers would tack on two more runs in the stanza thanks to an RBI double by Jackson Appel and a run-scoring single from Craig Larsen.

Appel had a big game at the dish, as he went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI.

With Eaise in cruise control, Penn added an insurance run in the sixth courtesy of a RBI double down the right-field line by Werchan.

Penn put the game out of reach with a four-run outburst in the eighth.
