Softball Falls at Saint Joseph's, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team saw its modest three-game win streak end on Wednesday afternoon as the Quakers fell to Saint Joseph's, 3-1.

Penn is now 5-4 on the season, while the Hawks are 13-12.

How It Happened
The Hawks took the lead in the top of the third inning when, with one out, Sarah Ostaszewski deposited Julia Longo's pitch well over the wall just inside the right-field foul pole.

Julia Mortimer tied it up with one out in the bottom of the fourth. The freshman had a strong at-bat, fouling off four 3-2 pitches, and it paid off when she stroked a shot that cleared the fence in left-center, her second home run of the season. Sarah Schneider followed that up with a single and stole second, but the Quakers stranded her there and the game was tied after four.

Saint Joseph's chased Longo in the fifth, using five singles and a hit batsman to score twice. Abigail Abramson was able to keep Penn within reach, though, coming on and inducing a grounder back to the box for the final out with the bases loaded.

That proved to be enough for the Hawks, as Emily Siler came on in relief of starter Amanda Herr and allowed just one hit over the final three innings. Overall, the Quakers collected five hits with Mortimer getting two of them. In the circle, Abramson allowed just one hit across 2.1 innings of relief work.

Next Up
Penn is scheduled for a doubleheader at Drexel next Wednesday, with first pitch in Game 1 slated for 2 p.m.
