Padilla's Record-Setting Game Spoiled By Memphis in OT, 73-68

LOS ANGELES – Junior captain Kayla Padilla put on a record-setting performance on Saturday afternoon to wrap up the University of Pennsylvania women's team's West Coast trip at the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Class, but Memphis spoiled the day with an overtime decision, topping the Quakers, 73-68.

The Quakers went 1-1 in California, moving to 4-2 for the season, while Memphis improved to 6-1.

*Padilla dropped a career-high 36 points on 13-for-26 shooting. The 36 points marks the 10th highest mark in program history. The current program record was set in 2001 when Diana Caramanico dropped 42 against Albany.

*Padilla's 36 points included nine three-pointers, the most in program history in a single game. She broke the record of seven that was set four times since 1997. The most recent feat was Phoebe Sterba's seven at Brown in 2019.

*On top of her scoring frenzy, Padilla registered five assists, four rebounds and a steal while playing all 45 minutes in the game.

*Sophomore Jordan Obi registered her fifth double-figure scoring game with 12 points, including a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. She added a season-best three blocks, as she has recorded at least one in all six games this season, totaling 11.

*Junior Silke Milliman set career highs in rebounds (11) and blocks (4) and added three assists and four points.

How It Happened
A tight first quarter had the Tigers carrying a one-point advantage into the second frame until the Quakers heated up. Padilla had eight first-quarter points, but nearly doubled that in the second with 14 including 4-for-5 from deep. An 18-point quarter for Penn pushed it ahead at the half by four, 33-29.

Both teams were locked in for a 17-17 third quarter, as the Tigers tamed Padilla to just three points. However, Penn had other Quakers maintain the offensive pace led by Obi's five for the quarter. Off the bench, freshmen Lizzy Groetsch and Marianna Papazoglou combined for seven.

The fourth quarter had the two teams knotted up at the final media timeout 54-54 with 3:50 remaining. Coming out of the break, Padilla drilled her seventh three of the game to tie the program record and set a new career mark to help the Quakers reclaim the lead.

In the final minute of regulation, Memphis built a two-point lead off a layup and 1-for-2 at the free throw line with 22 seconds on the clock. Going to the hot hand in the closing seconds, Penn got the ball to Padilla who squared up at the top of the arc to drop in the program-record eighth three of the game to give the Quakers a 60-59 lead with 16 seconds left.

Unfortunately, a personal foul with one second left in regulation sent the Tigers to the line to hit 1-of-2 to send the game to overtime, the first time this season for the Quakers. Memphis outscored Penn, 13-8, in extra time to secure the win.
