PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's squash team made it four straight sweeps to open the season with a pair of 9-0 wins over Dickinson and Franklin Marshall on Sunday from the Penn Squash Center; the men dropped just seven games over 36 matches between Saturday and Sunday.
In his first match as a Quaker,
Roger Baddour posted a 3-0 win to open the morning session against the 26th-ranked team in the College Squash Association (CSA) preseason rankings, with
Tushar Shahani following suit shortly after.
Andrew Douglas trailed 8-3 in the first game out of the #1 spot, before storming back with eight straight points to take a 1-0 lead; he eventually won 3-0.
Shaam Gambhir made it four straight 3-0 matches to start the day before
Nick Spizzirri clinched the team victory for Penn with a 3-1 win. After
Krish Bhavnani posted a 3-1 win,
Yash Bhargava,
James Flynn and
Alexander Trauber all posted 3-0 wins to close out the match. (Three games lost out of 18 morning matches the whole weekend).
Aly Abou Eleinen kicked off the afternoon slate against the 15th-ranked Diplomats with an 11-2, 11-4, 11-7 win out of the #1 slot. Gambhir and
Nathan Kueh made it 3-0 Penn, finishing each of their matches just seconds apart.
Dillon Huang made it 4-0 Quakers before
Brian Cowhey officially clinched the victory.
Flynn and
Saksham Choudhary finished their matches just seconds apart, aided by a near three-minute long rally on Choudhary's match point. With
Zach Bradlow and
Dana Santry the only two Quakers left on the courts, Bradlow fed off the energy of the large crowd, letting out a few screams as he closed out his win, before Santry put the finishing touches on a perfect afternoon and near-perfect weekend for the top-ranked team in the country.
The men are back in action for four matches in three days from the Penn Squash Center starting next Friday with a 5 p.m. first serve against Virginia.
