Field Hockey Fends Off Brown's Late Push to Win, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team earned its second Ivy League win of the season on Saturday, securing its 10th straight victory over Brown, 3-2.

The Quakers (5-6, 2-2 Ivy League) put two away in the opening five minutes by Meghan Ward and Julia Russo to give Penn a comfortable cushion until the fourth quarter. Courtney Kenah scored the final goal for Penn in the last frame. The Bears drop below .500 with the loss, 6-7, and 2-2 in Ivy play.

*Ward's goal is the second straight game with a finish, her third goal of the season.

*Russo's finish is her third of the season, as Russo and Ward now lead the team in scoring.

How It Happened
Penn only needed three minutes to find the back of the cage in the game, as a defensive play in Brown's circle transitioned to Ward redirecting a pass into the goal.

Nearly two minutes later, Russo went unassisted on a finish to open the spread to two goals which held all the way to the fourth quarter.

In the homestretch, a penalty corner for the Quakers pushed the score to 3-0 when Kenah sent the corner up to Elita van Staden, who passed it back toward Kenah for the quick touch into the cage.

Brown ended its scoring drought in the 52nd minute and added one more on a penalty stroke in the final 16 seconds, but the Quakers held off the late Bear push for the victory.

Up Next
The Quakers return to Ellen Vagelos Field for their next game, hosting Yale next Saturday, October 23, for their annual Pink Game. Start time is set for noon.
