NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Pennsylvania men's golf team has completed the first day at the Bash at The Beach Tournament being hosted by Appalachian State. The Quakers have all 13 players in the field, with two five-man teams and three others playing as individuals.
Among Penn's A team, junior
Mitchell Cornell was the low scorer through the tournament's first 36 holes as he followed up a first-round 79 with a 3-under-par, second-round 69 that was low round among all Penn players on the day. Cornell was t-11th in par-4 scoring on Monday and is tied for 58th in a field of 105 golfers overall.
Jason Langer had the team's low first-round score, a 2-under-par 70, en route to 152 for the day and a t-74th finish. Sophomores
Carter Prince and
Mark Haghani scored in both rounds and are tied for 91st and 94th, respectively, while senior
Eric Ganshaw ended the day in 101st place.
The B team was led on Monday by freshman
Harrison Ornstein, who shot an even-par 144 on the day and finished tied for 27th in the field. In the process, Ornstein tied for third in par-5 scoring and had nine birdies. Freshmen
Andy Fan (78-75—153) and
Anthony Basilio (78-80—158) scored in both rounds and are tied for 77th and 84th, respectively, while sophomore
Jason Fan is tied for 88th overall and classmate
Caleb Blackburn is 100th.
Among the players in the field as individuals, junior
Brandon Wang shot a 1-under-par 71 in the first round and a 1-over-par 73 in the second round, leaving him tied with Ornstein for low Penn players on the day and 27th overall. Freshman
Jeff Tian also shot a second-round 73 and ended the day tied for 66th, while classmate
Simon Markowitz is tied for 81st overall.
UNC-Wilmington holds the team lead after Monday's 36 holes; the Seahawks shot 559 as a team and are seven shots ahead of both Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech. Individually, Jacksonville State's Jesus Montenegro finished the day at 7-under-par 137 and is one shot ahead of Taisuke Ono (Queens) and Agustin Segundo Oliva Pinto (UNCW). Devin Morley (Louisville) and Devin Johnson (Loyola Chicago) are another shot behind at 5-under-par 139.
The Bash at The Beach will conclude with a final 18 holes on Tuesday at the par-72 Surf Golf and Beach Club; a shotgun start is scheduled for 9 a.m.
