HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling program competed in its second and third duals of the season on the first day of the Virginia Duals. Penn went down to the wire with Old Dominion, but the Monarchs were able to edge the Quakers in several tight matches to win the contest, 18-13. In the first consolation dual, a pair of pins and an injury default blew open an otherwise close contest, as Kent State defeated Penn, 27-12.
In the opening round's dual against Old Dominion, the Quakers had the only bonus point win—
Michael Colaiocco's 13-5 major decision in the day's first match. Of the ten matches, seven were decided by two points or fewer while four were decided by one point. Two matches were tied at the end of regulation and required sudden victory/tie breakers.
Against Kent State, Penn won two of the first three matches and four of the ten. However, a trio of six-point decisions for the Golden Flashes provided some separation between the two sides.
Penn can take plenty of positives, however. Freshmen Colaiocco (125),
Cam Connor (157), and
Cole Urbas (197) won their first collegiate duals. Additionally, Colaiocco and
Doug Zapf each won both of their matches on the day.
Old Dominion 18, Penn 13
Colaiocco got the dual off to an excellent start, taking a 13-5 major decision over ODU's Killian Cardinale at 125 pounds. The freshman started the match with a single-leg takedown and held on for the remainder of the first period to accumulate 2:10 of riding time.
After starting bottom in the second period, an escape and another pair of takedowns gave Colaiocco a 7-1 advantage. With bonus points in sight, the New Jersey native started the third period aggressively. Colaiocco let Cardinale loose, but Cardinale quickly took a single leg sweep for a takedown. Colaiocco responded with an immediate escape and a takedown to extend his lead to 10-4. After securing a riding time point, Colaiocco let him loose and fought to earn one final takedown for a 13-5 major decision and a 4-0 Penn lead.
At 133,
Carmen Ferrante stepped up for the Quakers to face ODU's Shannon Hanna. The wrestlers were evenly matched, as the only points in regulation were a pair of escapes. In sudden victory, Ferrante looked primed to take the victory. He grabbed Hanna's leg and went for the leg sweep, but Hanna countered with a takedown for a 3-1 decision. The result cut Penn's lead to 4-3.
After moving up to No. 22 in the latest FloWrestling top-25,
Doug Zapf entered his match with 11th-ranked Sa`Derian Perry. Zapf got on the board first with an escape, then turned an ankle pick into a takedown which extended his lead to 3-0. This would be enough, as an escape and another takedown secured a big, 6-1 victory. The decision was Zapf's first ranked win of the season and extended the Quakers' lead to 7-3.
Penn would go on to lose the following two matches. ODU's Kenan Carter used an escape and riding time for a narrow, 2-0 win over
Lucas Revano at 149. At 157, a pair of third-period takedowns gave 18th-ranked Larry Early a 9-4 win over
Anthony Artalona. The two wins put the Monarchs up 9-7.
Penn got back on track and back into the lead in the 165-pound match.
Jake Lizak started strong, taking a single-leg sweep for a late first-period takedown. Lizak escaped almost immediately in the second, but ODU's Shane Jones responded with a takedown to cut the senior's lead to 3-2. Lizak showed his experience and held on to the narrow lead in the match's final period to take the decision and give Penn a 10-9 lead.
The Monarchs responded with three consecutive one-point decisions to take an 18-10 lead and clinch the dual. With
Neil Antrassian leading 5-1 heading into the final period of the 174-pound match, ODU's Alex Cramer mounted an incredible comeback as a reversal, takedown, and riding time point secured a 6-5 win.
Jesse Quatse was unable to hold on in TB-1 and dropped a 2-1 decision, while
Cole Urbas could not mount a final attack as he was dealt a 2-1 decision.
Ben Goldin ensured the Quakers would end on a strong note with a heavyweight win. Down 5-2 heading into the final period, Goldin tied it up with an escape and a pair of stalling penalties. With ten seconds on the clock, the sophomore countered an ankle pick attempt by the Monarchs' Jacob Bullock with a takedown to take a 7-5 decision.
Kent State 27, Penn 12
For the second time today, Colaiocco started the dual with a convincing victory. After Kent State's Tomas Gutierrez secured an early takedown, Colaiocco responded with an escape and a takedown to take a 3-2 lead after the first period. Starting the second period on top, Colaiocco got Gutierrez into a cradle for a nearfall, extending his lead to 7-2. An escape and riding time gave him a 9-2 decision and the Quakers a 3-0 lead.
Kent State responded in a big way. With Ferrante down 2-1 after the first period, the Golden Flashes' Tim Rooney turned a headlock to get Ferrante on his back for a second-period pin. The bonus points gave Kent State a 6-3 lead.
Doug Zapf tied the match once again, as a 7-3 decision made it 6-6. Zapf earned his second dual decision of the day as two first-period takedowns gave him a 4-2 lead. Zapf continued on the front foot, with an escape and another takedown moving him to 15-4 on the season.
However, Kent State regained its lead once again. After
Jon Errico overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a pair of escapes, a third-period escape by Kody Komara was enough for a 3-2 decision.
At 157,
Cam Connor earned his first collegiate dual victory to tie the match at 9-9. The freshman jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a pair of takedowns and never looked back, blanking the Golden Flashes' Conan Becker to a 7-0 decision. Kent State would go on to win the next three matches, including a six-point injury default at 184 to take a 21-9 lead and all but seal the victory. Urbas saved face with his first collegiate dual victory, but a pin on Goldin wrapped things up.
The Quakers will meet Duke tomorrow at 10 a.m. to battle for seventh place and close out the Virginia Duals.
