HOW IT HAPPENED
When facing a team with the offensive firepower like the Tar Heels have, it is vital to weather the initial offensive surge. The Quakers did just that in the first quarter. With three saves in the first 15 minutes as well as some blocked shots by the Penn backs, the game was level at the first intermission.
The Tar Heels continued to mount pressure to start the second quarter, and eventually found the back of the cage three minutes into the period. The reigning national champion and top-ranked team in the nation did not let up from there, scoring another four goals in the space of seven minutes to make it 5-0 at the half.
Penn regrouped at halftime and looked sharp for the remainder of the game but were unable to overcome the deficit. North Carolina closed out the game with one final goal—a deflection from a corner with under three minutes remaining in the game. The goal came from the Tar Heels' only shot on goal in the second half.
